Finally got around to looking at the VI-955 I bought. Engine is clean and compression comes in at 180psi. It had a worn sprocket drive that I replaced with an Archer rim drive. When I put the clutch on it stuck out from the drum a good amount. I took it off and realized the Archer drum has a raised area around the hole the drive shaft goes through, I attached a picture. I believe this raised area eliminates the need for the washer between the clutch and the drum because I removed the washer and the clutch fits like it should. Also, the race is longer than the bearing, see picture. I believe the race is the wrong part. Anyone have any thoughts?

The race is supposed to be longer so when you tighten the clutch it tightens against the race

Thanks undee70ss. I installed an Oregon drum with a different design and everything works fine now. I fired up the saw and put it into some wood and it runs very rich on high rpm. I turned the high jet screw in all the way and it still runs rich. I haven't got into the carb yet, but I assume it has the governor and someone has tinkered with it. More updates to come later. Thanks again undee70ss. One other thing, the manual oiler pumps air, I can hear it coming through the bar oil port. Auto oiler works great.

Alright. The saw had a HS-151A carb and it appears that it wasn't tinkered with. I had an HS-151-B that I know is good and installed it. I put new fuel lines and a new manual oiler line on. Started the saw and it ran but died while I was trying to adjust the carb, I flooded it and it has to sit for awhile now.

So the saw started and ran the same way it did with the original carb. Closed the high jet needle and it still runs rich. I thought these carbs limited rpm's. Like the engine would surge and back off surge and back off surge and back off when at WOT? I'll wait to hear from you guy's before I do anything else.

They limit rpm’s by introducing fuel in the carb throat by the governor. It’s possible the governor is bad or leaks.

What type of main nozzle does the carb have ? Drilled with no check valve and just a screen ?
Some have had success replacing the nozzle with a non-drilled check-valve type, others have defeated the governor also, to cure the overly rich issue and have a fully adjustable carburetor.
Early VI-955's had Tillotson HS-103B carbs, yours must be newer to have the 151 carb.

Thanks guys. I'll pull the carb off and check. I'm going to modify the other carb and put that one in also. Will let you know how things go.

Saw is still acting the same way. I'm going to pull the reed and check that out. I'm having fuel spray back. I would pull parts from a 925 but I don't have any gaskets, I ordered some from Leon.

Three reeds are firm and one is soft. I ordered some more. Now the saw sits until the new ones arrive next week some time.

I received the parts from Leon today and replaced the weak reed. I'm running a 24 inch bar and put it into a small piece of oak. It seems to run better now, but I won't know for sure until I get it into some big wood. I'm meeting a guy down the road with 30 inch maple logs tonight. I won't be cutting them until sometime later, maybe tomorrow. I will certainly let you guys know how the saw performs. I haven't opened up the old carb yet to check on 5terrysupersaws question yet.

The saw ran great in big wood. I was very happy with it. I'm still playing with the carb settings, but very impressed with it's performance. To answer 5terrysupersaws question I don't believe the main nozzle has a check valve.

I'm having a fuel boiling issue. I'm going to disassemble the saw and give it a really good cleaning. I think the problem is the screen on the starter cover gets clogged immediately. It is sucking in so much air for cooling it pulls all the chips onto the screen. I mean this thing sucks a ton of air for cooling. Has anyone else had this problem with this family of saws? It's Terry built UT: 10423 serial: 5192T086

I took the saw out again and figured out the problem. When I cut close to the ground the exhaust blows chips around and covers the screen. I just have to be careful and keep the screen clean after cutting close to the ground. I didn't have any fuel boil after several large cuts were made.
