It’s sucking bar oil into the crankcase, check the duckbill in oil tank and line routings.

I removed the clutch ,pardon me if I express my ignorance and surprise! It was not what I expected but I’m new to these clutches and never saw an”S “ type clutch before. Are these clutches restorable,as simple as they are?can you make them work better by cleaning, scuffing and sanding them? Is there a major and minor dimension between the outer shell and clutch S? Or is the fact of it slipping the determining factor of “ just get a new one”, lol ?Sorry ,I was expecting three shoes and springs etc.Can it be “expanded” through mechanical means to spread it out a bit?im thinking it could by heating it and retempering it to its original spring state, but that’s just the blacksmith in me thinking! As far as the rest of the unit,I did indeed have the oil lines backward even after I was “sure “they were right! Thanks for the picture. Also a hint to guys working on the clutch,I bought a tool a few years ago from Harbor Freight, for small 4” grinders,it is an adjustable spanner for removing the hub nut on discs of various brands of grinders and it works great on removing clutches ,it needs a pipe for leverage but works real good expanded full size.

If I replace the “S”type clutch with A 97921 three shoe clutch ,does it neccesitate replacement of the clutch shell and sprocket unit also or will it fit that shell?

I looked at the classic 180 parts saw for a clutch and it had a 97921 three shoe clutch .I reinstalled this in the XL and it fit ,it’s shell however had a pretty beat up sprocket and the Needle bearings fell out on the work table,so I decided to use the “S” clutch shell which was in better shape and otherwise identical and did a mix and match ,this was angst the later advice of undee70 ss,however since it is now running, not smoking and cutting nicely,I will leave the mix and match in place, unless there is good reason not too.As to that I defer to undee70ss,as I do respect your opinion and more extensive knowledge and experience in the matter of homelites, and thank you for your advice and help.

You can dump the bar oil and run it without a chain to confirm that it's burning bar oil. If the duckbill is gone, it's in the bottom of the oil tank and sometimes an adapter is required to connect the duckbill to the tubing. I've made the adapter by using plastic electrical wire insulation from a #10 solid copper wire. Just remove the solid copper wire and cut the insulation to length. I think it was #10. If not #10 try #12. Removing copper stranded insulation was not user friendly and not as good. Think maybe I use pieces of #10 romex copper. Also keep a heads up, I think maybe some of them little homies had a sintered iron piece up in the oil tube, maybe outside the oil tank up in the tube, to soften the crankcase pulses, but I've seen them work ok without such.

It’s actually running real good now as on Friday I used it to clear about 75 yards of brush and saplings along my retaining wall and at my daughters today it did a good job on a 8” tulip tree and it ran out of oil right about when it ran out of gas, which is about what it’s supposed to do .So I guess it’s on the active duty roster again.
