I fired up my XL-104 the other day & noticed the chain wasn't going anywhere when I throttled it up.I pulled the clutch off today & saw that it was completely worn out.I looked at the IPL & found the part # was 63670-2.I then looked through my parts & found that I have 3 shoes, part # 63670,great! Except there's a big difference between the shoes on my back plate & the new shoes.Apparently Homelite made 2 different size clutches (at least),2 3/4 & 2 7/8.I can't seem to find the bigger shoes anywhere.I could go with the smaller clutch, but I have no idea if the springs are the same in both size clutches.

Ed, according to IPL for XL 101, 102, 103, 104 revision 1 there are two different part numbers listed for the springs in the clutch. The old style 2-3/4 inch clutch drum requires spring part number 65842 and shoe part number 64569-3. The larger drum requires spring part number 64065 and shoe part number 63670. I hope this helps.

The shoe - part # 63670 is too small, that's the one sitting on top of the clutch assembly.

I thought your question was if the springs were different sizes, unless I misunderstand.

Maybe the clutch that was on thge 104 isn't the correct clutch to begin with?Who knows what's been mickey moused on this saw.

I'd say that the clutch is correct and the info that erch posted for the later revision is what you need. The 64569 clutch shoe is shaped like the ones you have and the proper spring if you intend to replace those also is the 65842. Somewhere fairly early in the model run Homelite made the change and based on parts availability (or lack of), it appears that customers were encouraged to upgrade to the newer style clutch when problems came up.

Is it just me or do the springs in the picture look to be almost stacked up? Doesn't look like they have much travel left for clutch engagement.

I found a set of shoes to put on the back p;ate I had here that was on the saw.Now I can't get the clutch back in the drum. I also got the used clutch in the mail yesterday & put it on the 104 only to find out the saw won't tune,it's in dire need of crank seals.Go figure.
