has anybody just done a clearcoat and left the original paint (what's left of it ) on the saw ? if so, how did you prep it before clearcoat as to leave what's left of the paint ? I plan on using the USC SprayMax 2K Glamour High Gloss Aerosol Clearcoat but the paint flakes easily and would like to keep as much of it as possible .

I haven't but I know on trucks that have clear over patina a bath and prep with glass cleaner is a gentle way to clean the surface and not tear up the paint to bad. Then let it air dry and clear coat.

I have not cleared an entire saw, but have added back waterslide decals and cleared over those, on starter or clutch covers. I simply use a clean cloth and some carb cleaner to lightly rub off any oil residue. i would think this is very tough to do on a saw body, especially in crevises. That is where your clear will begin to peel back I would assume.

I think I might just try some REALLY fine wet sanding and maybe clean up with some rubbing alcohol and hit it with the Spraymax Clearcoat and just see what happens -guess this is where that learning curve comes in to play -will update when done

This is why you need a junk saw to practice/experiment on before you touch the good one.

I certainly wouldn’t sand it. I have had so many of these old saws lose paint simply by looking at them, I cant imagine sanding one that I thought to be delicate already. All you need is an oil free surface. Practicing on a junk saw is a great idea. I would be happy to send one! 😆

Thanks everybody for the input -I have since reconsidered the sanding part -I will try a small piece with the glass cleaner to degrease and see how it goes .
