I just bought an XL-104 last night on feebay.I'd never seen an XL-104 that was complete, only parts here & there. It's supposed to have good compression,I have no idea about spark. The ignition systems on the 104s are kinda unique as I understand it.

I've never seen one. Good score! I'm looking forward to pictures. The 104 looks identical to the 103,both are red & white. The 104 has a tag on it,but too dirty to read.I just hope someone didn't put a 104 recoil on a 103.The saw has been shipped already & I should have it by week's end.

So,here's the scoop on the 104.I received the saw today in good condition. The only things that'll need to be done are:put a new starter grip on it ( it's missing),put an outer bar plate on it (it's missing),put a new fuel line on it (it's missing),put a helicoil in one of the starter screw bosses. The throttle lock pin was slightly seized,a little lube & it's working fine now.The saw has great compression & spark.Wrong spark plug in it,has a CJ8 in it & should have a CJ6.Most likely the carb needs to be rebuilt. It has a hard nose bar on it that looks to be pretty much shot.I'll try to find a nice roller nose bar for it. I don't think the saw has really cut much wood,it's in much too good of shape. The fuel cap isn't original IMO.It has the black octagon cap.IIRC,the fuel cap should've been square.

Today after I got home from yet another dr.visit,I hunted up an outer bar plate,A new air filter,a couple of grommets for the air box & fuel tank, a new starter grip (sorry it's a Mac 300 series grip, but the original grips are NLA),& a bar & chain for it that's in much better shape than the one that came with it.I also pulled the carb off for a rebuild & I pulled the reed assembly out too.Good thing I pulled the reeds, the screws that hold the spacer on prior to the reeds were loose.I also cleaned the old crud off the saw.Oh yeah,I pulled the muffler to have a look at the piston & cylinder, the piston has some very light scoring from carbon deposits. Here are a couple of pics.

It's a runner! I rebuilt the carb today & put a new fuel line & filter in.I took it out & fueled it up & had it fire on the 14th pull.It was running erratic & I tried adjusting the carb with no success.I remembered that I put my last CJ6 plug in it & figured it was no good.I pulled it out & put the CJ8 plug back in that came with the saw & it runs fantastic! Just a couple odds - n-ends to finish up on like a new duck bill in the fuel cap, choke rod back on,& bar & chain back on.

I forgot to mention yesterday that I had a slight mishap right after rebuilding the carb.I was tightening down the screws on the pump side cover when the last screw broke off in the carb.I was lucky in that there was a small tit of metal sticking up that I was able to get my thumbnail on & unscrew it out.I wasn't reefing down on the screw,it was just getting snug when it broke.I found another screw on a "parts" carb & was able to continue.
