I’m replacing a set of piston rings on a ‘72 XL-12 and it’s my first time dealing with piston rings. I have a set of NOS rings (Homelite 58877). Is there anything a newbie needs to look out for. Do they need to be oriented a certain way, certain order, etc. Or are there any tricks or tips you guys could pass along?

I sifted through Leon’s videos and found a tear down and piston replacement on a XL 500 that covered what I think I needed.

Work the first ring into the top grove, then work it into the lower grove. Do not try going all the way into the second grove from the top. There is a small pin in the piston ring groves, that the rings have to align with, to keep them from rotating. Make sure the rings are aligned with the pins when you compress them to install the cylinder. Good luck!

Thanks for the info! That's the gist I got from his video. Anything the first time is usually intimidating! Hopefully it'll go well but from what you've told me, and the videos I watched I should be ok.

Once you get the old ones off, practice putting them off and on a few times. Eliminate the fear lol.

Be careful pushing piston into bore. If it stops or doesn't "feel" right check er out.I broke a ring trying to reinstall a piston in a John Deere 2 banger power unit. Ya can't just buy one ring from JD.

Got them installed without breaking any. Went smoother than expected but you’re right. If it don’t feel right it’s probably not. They’re so fragile, one wrong move and…snap! Then you’re waiting on more in the mail or like you said having to buy 2 just to use one. Thanks for all the help!
