Yup,last day of 2022 & I got another older SEZ for $25.It's a red & white model, looks to be a '79 according to the serial #.The recoil is messed up with the rope hanging out.No bar or chain. For $25 I couldn't go wrong if only for parts.Pics to come after I get the saw & go through it.

Today I picked up an EZ and A super EZ For $50 each. Have not tried to start or anything. Both have compression and both have paint. The bars look good but the chains are shot. Just looked into the cylinder on one and it looks good. Kind of varnished up.

You can clean up the varnish by using a 50/50 mix of acetone & ATF in the cylinder.Let it set & soak for a few days.If the rings are stuck it'll free them up.

I got the SEZ today & was not quite expecting it to be in as rough shape as it is.Where to start? The recoil is total junk, luckily I had another recoil here to put on,but first....to get the old recoil off.The 3 screws that were in it were probably in it for the last 25 yrs.or more, they were seized in place. The 4th screw was missing & the boss is stripped out.It has an electronic module - the blue coil of death,& it's totally dead. The handle bracket is wobbly, most likely needs the plastic grommets. The dumb ass shipped the saw with old rancid fuel in it.I can't get the air filter knob or the oil cap off by hand.It had the wrong spark plug in it (as usual). That's just a quick going over.On the plus side,it does have good compression.I didn't know the electronic modules were put on a 1979 model.Talk about trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

I've had saws that werre certainly in much worse shape than this one & I got them running again.I tried another module on it & it was dead too.I bit the bullet & ordered a new module from Standard Magneto,it'll probably be here next week.I've got a bunch of HDC carb kits coming too.

I'd really like to get some spark on this saw,but it seems that Standard Magneto is taking their good old sweet time in shipping out a module.I called them yesterday to see what was going on with my order & was told that all that needed to be done was put the lamination into the core.I'm thinking of borrowing a module from another SEZ for now.

I pulled the recoil apart today to see what was wrong with it.The rewind spring was broken,it looked like it had corroded in half,so much rust & crud.My parts inventory shows that I have at least one rewind spring for the SEZ,I just need to locate it.
I tore apart another SEZ recoil last yr.& had trouble getting it to work.Today I pulled it apart again & found that where the spring is supposed to have the little round piece hook into it wasn't bent properly,it was lifting up not enabling the round piece to catch on the spring. After some slight bending of the spring I put it back together & it works fine now.

Today I pulled apart the original recoil that came on this SEZ & it was a complete nightmare. The spring was broken into at least 5 pieces.I looked up the part # & found that I had a few in my inventory,BUT when I went to put the new spring in the recoil cap it wouldn't fit.The first loop was riveted, possibly to hold it together & not have a mass of spaghetti?I had to file the rivet off & then put the spring in the cap by hand, not an easy task with crippled hands.I got it all together & tensioned & it let go,no tension.I took it apart again & found the round piece wasn't catching on the spring,I had to bend the spring for it to work properly. For those of you thinking I used the wrong spring, wrong answer.I used part # 65107.Now that it's together it's binding when I tighten down the 2 screws that hold the cap/cover on.I'm thinking the pulley is warped.I took it apart & cleaned it up very thoroughly. Here's a pic of the old spring.

The spring with the rivet doesn't go in a can. The one that goes in a can doesn't have a rivet.
I've never seen a spring broke into so many pieces like that.

Who said anything about the spring going into a CAN? I said it goes into a CAP/COVER.The old spring had a rivet in it & I'm not fishing it out of the garbage to take a pic either.

Ah hell, I think I misfired. After re-reading your post, I see you said cap. I was thinking of the loose springs that wind into the little tin can retainer that are used on plastic rewinds. But after looking at the SEZ IPL, it appears the SEZ plastic rewind doesn't even use that style.
So you have the metal rewind, which in my opinion, is the better one.

I just got off the phone with Standard Magneto (man how I hate doing business with them) to see where my module is for this saw.I was told it was sitting in the shipping dept.& don't know why it wasn't shipped yet.My guess is that it was due to the holiday yesterday & there was no mail service.

Today was rebuild the carb day.I rebuilt the original carb & it wouldn't hold pressure, then I found another carb & it wouldn't hold pressure either. Finally I found a 3rd carb & rebuilt that one.It had a very slow leak down,so it should be good.
I also found a couple more blue coils of death that are pretty much junk - no spark. The last one I put on the saw had intermittent weak yellow spark.I've got one more to check tomorrow.I'll save the laminations & use a cheap Chinese Husky coil & make my own modules.I'm getting a little tired of spending $53 a pop for a new module.Standard Magneto finally shipped the module I ordered on Jan.6th,2 weeks later I'll get it,kinda ridiculous IMO.

I checked the last blue module & it was dead too.I noticed that the handle bracket was wobbly,so I pulled the shoulder screws out & just as I suspected there were no grommets in there.I had one pair left & put them in & it took care of the problem.I'm supposed to get the new module tomorrow,so it's possible this little bugger my run again.I also dumped out the old rancid fuel that was still in the tank & put a new fuel filter in it.

Well guys & gals,it's a ruinner! I got the ignition module in the mail today & I promptly installed it.I checked it for spark & took it out & fueled it up.It fired up in about 5-6 pulls.I had to do some carb adjustments & it runs great! I must've gone through about 25 16 in.chains only to find out that I don't have one that fits a SEZ.As it was,I had to put an old hard nose bar on it.Here are a couple pics.

I finally bit the bullet & ordered 2 of the Anzac ignition modules. The price of the modules is now over $18 ea.,but still a helluva lot cheaper than $54 for the 94111 module fro Standard Magneto. The shipping time from China is 2-3 weeks, but with my last experience with SM it took 2 weeks to get the module anyway,so no time lost IMO.
