hey all, i just picked up an xl76 in amazing condition. an old man had it sitting in his basement for years. fired it up and tuned it. but....it pours chain oil out of the little hole even when it just at idle, the oil is just being constantly pumped out. it seems to have a dual oil system with the manual thumb oiler, and what looks like a pump behind the clutch. is there an adjustment? what could be casuing this, it makes a huge mess when im just running it not to mention a waste of bar oil. also it seems very strange that theres two ways to oil the bar...im new to the chainsaw world lol. any help woid be awesome. thx.

ok so i just found out that the xl76 has an auto oiler with a manual override. that solves that mystery....so i guess my question is...is there an adjustment for the oiler behind the clutch to decrease the amount of oil being pumped? thanks.

Welcome to HOH!
There is no adjustment for the automatic oiler...it's tuned for the longest bar recommended, which is about 24". What looks like a lot on the bench idling is actually the right rate to empty the oil tank about the same time the fuel tank is empty, which will keep your chain & bar well lubricated.

thanks! glad to be in the group. I understand what your saying, but is it normal having what seems like an excessive amount of oil pouring down and dripping off the side of the chainsaw. it seems crazy to me. I havent been running power saws long but have been around them long enough to feel like somethings not right here. only reason im thinking this is because i compare that amount of oil to my poulan 8500 professional with a 32" bar, auto oiler and it doesnt come close to that amount. thats where i got confused and thought something must be wrong.

My best advice is to put a bar on it and run a tank of fuel & oil through...if they both empty at about the same time, it's operating as designed. I haven't run a 8500, so I can't make a comparison there. I do know that bench testing an XL-76 will net you a puddle of oil that is quite large after 3-4 minutes!

thanks for the input guys, i went into the bush to buck some logs as a light trial run. the xl76 screamed effortlessly and the oiler functioned properly!!!!! you guys were right. its just not a realistic way to test it out being on the bench like i had it.
