This was an unexpected Market Place find. The way the guy posted it with the pictures it was really hard to tell what it was. It was up for sale for well over a week and he was about 45 minutes north of where I lived so what the heck, decided to go look at it. Was pretty surprised that it was a 1050 but which one? Not that it really matters. It has the HL-222A carb on it. He had it for a while but it was having high idle issues. Gas would leek out of the bottom of the carb when pressing the trigger. He said "I'm so frustrated with it! I'm done so it's someone else's turn". Looked it over some more, no cracks other than the clutch cover has a hairline crack near the studs but everything else looked good. Gave him what he wanted for it which was $50 and off I went!

Quick check, compression looks really good hovering over 165. Pulled the muffler, looks good but grungy. Took the clutch cover off and inspected the clutch. The drum isn't spinning freely the way it should. Maybe time to replace the needle bearings. Just a quick check regarding the carb. It's interesting that none of the IPL's are listing the HL-222A.

That saw used the idle air bypass to control the idle. If you have trouble with the idle check the hose from the idle manifold to the cylinder
Great score on a early 1050.

You got a GREAT deal on that saw! Thanks! I got lucky for sure and went with my gut feeling to go out and look at it. If it was further out like few hours, I wouldn't of gone.

I checked the hose earlier and it's pretty stiff. Like I mentioned before the carb is leaking from the bottom and I can hear a wheezing sound coming out of the carb when I pull on the throttle. It looks though the fuel line was replaced at one point. It has the clear yellow tubing that I have seen on other saws.

Wow, what a deal! And 45 minutes? I drove about 4 hours away to pick mine up. But that was back when gas was less than $2.

I had a chance to pull the drum off earlier to see what was rubbing inside and I found the inside clutch spring popped off. It actually wore off the side of the spider clutch. It coated the shoes up pretty good and notched the inside drum. Here are the pics. Looks like I'll be looking for some shoes and maybe a drum. Don't quite understand how the spring would have popped off. Looks fine to me.

I'd probably just buff the outside of the shoes, put new springs on, reassemble and give it a shot. If it's not satisfactory at that point, you could buy more parts but I think it'll still work ok with some TLC.

I'll try buffing out the shoes. I do have a new set of springs but the spider clutch where the spring attaches and hangs on to is worn. Don't know if it will stay on. The hub is an Oregon 14026, may try to reuse it. I would like to replace the cage needle bearing but looking at the IPL and on Ebay, it looks different so need to investigate this more.
