I bought a quite remarkable looking XL-102 this evening on Feebay for a decent price. The saw looks to be in great shape & complete.I've got another 102,but haven't seen it in a couple of yrs.Even if the latest 102 has no spark I know where I can get a new condenser cheap. The only probem is I don't know if the condenser will be any good.I used to get my condensers from Bob Johnson who tested each & every one he sold.He told me he had to throw out several when he tested them as they weren't any good.I'm mainly concerned about compression.I do have a set of rings that I bought last yr.for my 103.According to Acres' site the 102 & 103 are the same size engine at 57cc.I think the saw I just bought is a manual only oiler.

I got the XL-102 today & was quite disappointed.Cosmetically it looks great, but engine-wise it's been weinered. When I pulled it over I heard squealing from everything being extremely dry - no lube.I sprayed lube into the cylinder, but the rings are stuck. It'll probably need rings at the least.BTW,it's a manual oiler only.

I've got some good news on this 102.Earlier today I gave the saw a prime & tried to get it to fire,it did have spark. With the rings stuck it didn't fire at all.About 3 hrs.later I came back to the saw while grilling dinner & noticed the compression had come up.I gave it another prime & this time it fired! I pulled the cap off the fuel tank to have a look at the fuel filter & noticed a tar like substance that coated the tank.I'm assuming that the fuel line had broken down in a tank full of fuel.I put some straight gas in the tank & swished it around in hopes of getting that gunk to break loose.I'll have a better look at the tank situation over the weekend after I finish up on my C72.

The fuel tank cleaned up nicely with the Goof Off.I rebuilt the carb on it today & naturally it didn't want to hold pressure.I had to lower the metering lever considerably & put nail polish on the welch plugs. The leak down was minimal compared to what it was originally.I got the carb on & had to borrow a fuel filter from an XL-101.I put fuel in it & began pulling on it & got nothiong.I primed it & still got nothing.Duh,try turning the switch on,Lol.Another pull & it fired right up,but died shortly thereafter.I went to try to restart it & the saw was locked up.I hoped it wasn't the engine.I took the recoil cover off & found the rope had come out of the pulley & was wound around the part that engages the pawls.I rewound the pulley & retensioned it,put it back on & the saw started again & died out.I went to restart it & it was locked up again. This time I cut off about 6 in.of frayed rope & put it back together. Now the saw had a miss in it.I noticed the plug wire had a bare spot,so I put electrical tape on it & fired it up again. It still had a miss in it,so I went to change the plug & ended up with the plug boot & spring in my hand.I did pull the plug & put a new CJ6 in it & wrapped the copper core wire around the tip of the plug & put the spring on to hold it in place. The saw continued to have the miss & eventually died. The condenser took a dump.

Update on the 102 - I got a NOS copndenser in the mail today that I bought from a seller on Feebay just one week ago.I pulled the points on the saw to have a look & don't know how the saw even ran.The points were so pitted from transfer of material due to the condenser breaking dowen over a long period of time.I found another set of used points that I had on hand & cleaned them up & put them in.I was almost finished when I ran out of time.I had to replace the coil wire too,it was a mess.I'll finish up tomorrow.

This saw turned out to be an electrical nightmare.I couldn't get any spark after gapping the coiol,so I went back into the points box to check everything out.The condenser was loose, not getting a good ground.I tightened up the screws & checked again & had intermittent spark. My suspicion was the switch, but after toggling it a couple times the saw fired right up & ran well.I shut the saw off & put a bar & chain on it & went to start it up & got nothing.I pulled the recoil off, pulled the switch wire & taped the end up so it couldn't ground out & the saw fired up on the 1st pull. The switch is no good,so I'm on the hunt for one. Here arer some pics of the little devil.
