Hi Guys, We don’t get many chances to go back in time, but today on my 58th birthday I got that chance…….so I went. It came in the form of a large cardboard box my FedEx guy left at my front door. A week or so ago I was cruising around Ebay, and I refreshed my “homelite chainsaw” search and there at the very top of the list was the beauty you see below. I’m pretty sure I was the first to see it, and I bought it instantly. I really didn’t even look at all the pics in the listing……I didn’t have to. And it arrived today, despite me thinking it would take a few more days to get here. So much to my surprise I opened the case and back to May of 1974 I went. I think it was used once. Literally. Air filter was perfect, gas lines still flexible, tank clean as a whistle, almost no paint loss except for a chip or two here and there, original bar and chain…….and the case still had the little foam piece the chain sits on to protect the bottom of the case. Then I found the bag of literature! The warranty card, owner’s manual, hang tag for the saw, etc, etc. It also came with 3 pints of Homelite oil and the plug/bar nut wrench. I’ve got a couple other “really nice” Homelites from this era, but this one takes the cake. There’s still some wood dust/oil gunk under the clutch cover, and the bar shows some wear……..but this is probably as close to a brand new saw from back then as I’ll ever get. So what I thought would be an uneventful birthday…..turned into something pretty cool.

Super nice-Sure love those 2-tone versions and that one is remarkable. It is nice finding things in great condition like that one, but I find it sad that they represent a lost dream- Never used for its intended purpose, and passed on to someone else to perhaps use.

Damn Bob! That' saw is in pristine condition! I've never seen one come up on eBay that looked that good.(at a reasonable price)

Wow, that's great. Those deals don't come around often. I wonder if it's a dykes ring saw? Seems like some of that red and white vintage had that style piston ring.
Are you going to wet it down and fire it up?

Hi billy,
Already did.....couldn't resist! I figured before I give it a thorough anal retentive cleaning I might as well see if she starts. And it took a whole 4 pulls and she fired up like it was 1974! I think there was even some 1974 air still in the carb, because it smelled goooood! Didn't run it long, as I didn't want to get that nice muffler all hot and bothered, but she runs and drives as new! Also made sure the oiler did it's thing, and it did.
Finding it was just one of those 'right place, right time' or 'blind squirrel finding an acorn every now and then' things. I used to check the SOLD listings on Ebay to see what great deals I missed......but that got too depressing. There's folks that sit there all day and snap up good deals before anyone sees them......retirement must be nice. But for once I got lucky and beat them to it. I didn't check to see if it's a dykes ring, but wouldn't that be the shit! Now you got me curious!
Speaking of lucky.......you guys probably remember me bitching about how a seller on eBay did a real shitty job of packing a 26LCS I won, and how the rear handle got destroyed. Well, as luck would have it, the very next 26LCS parts saw I bought on eBay actually came with a spare rear handle!!! I mean what are the odds of that? Then to add insult to injury.....I won another 26LCS parts junker last week that no one wanted and messaged the guy to please pack it well and protect that rear handle, so as not to duplicate the stupidity of seller #1. He messaged back that he already shipped it but packed it well......and included a couple extra parts he had laying around for it. That saw came yesterday too.......and guess what one of those extra parts was.......yeah, another rear handle. I think the chainsaw gods were smiling down on me yesterday. Think today I won't touch a chainsaw, as what goes up must come down......and I don't want to screw something up. That's what tomorrow is for.
;O) bob
