My 330 seems very hard to pull starter like it has to much compression I did find the gasket under the oil pump waa leaking bar oil back through pulse line I replaced the gasket and that helped. Lot but the saw it still hard to pull. Acting like it has to much compression

Does it pull easy with the plug out?

I read somewhere if starter rope was a little to short that could cause this the rope is 34 inches pulled all the way out I think homelite spec is 42 inches of #4 starter rope Also it does this with no carburetor on the saw

Did you just get this saw? Or you've had it for some time and now it seems to crank harder than it used to crank?
A 330 is one of the toughest cranking saws out there. It's fairly lightweight, has strong compression, a small flywheel and fairly soft rubber mounts. This combination makes for tough cranking. When I was still in the shop we watched who we sold 330's to after a couple of older guys returned with starting issues on new 330's. Traded them out for a Super XL and no more problems.

Problem started when I had bar oil leaking in to cylinder do to bad gasket under oil pump I messed that starter up and replaced gasket and fixed that problem I put a
compete used starter assembly on the saw and It will hardly turn the saw over under compression Am not getting bar oil in cylinder any more

You could try a longer rope like you mentioned but I'm not very optimistic about how much good it would do. If half the rope had broken off, maybe, but just a few inches short shouldn't be hurting much. Sounds like maybe it does have something to do with the different starter that you put on it though. What does the starter pulley and rope look like? If the rope is too small or badly worn, it can pull in beside itself in the pulley and make cranking difficult. This usually isn't as much of a problem on a 330 as it is on the smaller saws but worth looking at. Sounds like it's either something with the starter or you're still getting some oil in it. There's not very many other options.

Doest seem to be getting bar oil in it anymore I guess I'll take a old 330 starter pulleys and see how much rope it will acctually hold the homelite part number is for 42 inches of #4 rope but I thought I read a post from Leon where he recommended something different

I've wound hundreds of starter pulleys off a bulk spool and I always just installed the max amount that would fit before it started to put the pulley in a bind. Not sure just how much that would be on a 330 but 42" certainly sounds like it should be enough.

I filled the starter pulley with as much #4 starter rope as it would hold almost a foot more than was on the saw That cured the problem

Well good deal. I have to admit I wasn't very optimistic. It must have been getting a bit short.

Leon's Chainsaw You tube channel has a video on priming the 330 oil pump. I have it in memory for when I get to my 2 330's as long as my memory doesn't fail me between now and then. Also appreciate the recoil cord tips.
