I bought this XL-101 as advertised on Feebay.I was working on it today & as I was taking off the throttle handle it came to me that this saw might not be a 101.The drivecase is completely red.The throttle handle, drivecase cover,AF cover,& recoil are green/blue.Is there any way, other than measuring the piston/cylinder to determine if it's a 103 or 104?
I bought a replacement 104 throttle handle thinking it was a screwed on oil tank cover, but it turned out to be another junk epoxied oil tank cover.I just automatically assumed that the 104 was not an epoxied tank.So now I'm back to where I was originally, only the saw is apart now.
I'll pull the clutch off tomorrow & see if there's an automatic oil pump in there,it almost looks like there is.It must've been plugged off.Another mongrel.

I didn't get a chance to pull the clutch yet to see if there's an oil pump there.Last night I went trolling on Feebay for a throttle handle.I was hoping to find a good used one with a screwed on oil tank cover, but ended up getting a bare bones NOS throttle handle.I'll have to transfer all the parts from the no good handle that I bought last month onto the NOS handle.I just finished rebuilding the carb for it.The inlet barb was plugged with black goo from the old line.I had a helluva time getting it out.

I've run into a bit of a dilemma with this saw.I got the NOS handle & transferred all the parts over from the other 2 throttle handles. Here's where I ran into a problem - on the bottom of the oil tank there's a fitting that's supposed to go to the automatic oil pump.Since there's no automatic oil pump,I was just going to block off the fitting, either with a plug,or a cap.It seems that Homelite used a size that was invented by Homelite.I went to my local hardware store (they've got good selections of fittings) & we couldn't find anything in a plug or a cap to block it off.I'm sure I'm not the only person who has ever done this before.

If you are looking for the #59751 plug , it's a 1/16" (x 27 tpi) pipe plug . It is a standard American pipe plug , but not common .
McMaster-Carr shows them only in brass that I could find .

A 1/4 in.is too small & a 5/16 is too big.How can a 1/16 pipe plug fit?You must be thinking of something else.I suppose with McMaster Carr I'd have to buy a bag of 50.

CharlesCharles,I looked on McMaster-Carr & found several plugs.Which one would be the one to use for this application?

I would use the brass pipe plug with sealant . This would be a good time to also order a brass feeler gauge stock in 0.015" for setting
module to flywheel clearance .

The only brass plug in 1/16 in.size that I found has an O ring on it & the specs don't say how many TPI it has.

If you are looking at McMaster-Carr , the part number is 5078K167 . All 1/16" NPT fittings and pipe are 27 Threads Per Inch .

Thanks Charles,I placed an order this a.m.& they said I'd get it the next day.I'll believe that when I see it.I ordered other merchandise to make the order worthwhile. With the order placed,I began putting the NOS handle onto the 101(?) todayAll that's needed to get it running again is a new fuel line & filter & the carb installed.I checked for spark because I put the switch in from the other handle I bought that was defective. The switch was good & it had spark.I'm also going to pull the flywheel & clutch to clean & lube the bearing. There was quite a bit of old sawdust under the flywheel that I couldn't get to.I'll be a happy camper when I hear this saw fire up & run again.

I couldn't believe it when I got my order from McMaster-Carr this a.m.! The plugs fit in the oil tank boss just fine. Thanks for that info Charles, that was a big help! I worked on it for a few hrs.today.I pulled the clutch & lubed the bearing, put in a new fuel line & filter,& put the rebuilt carb back in.I had some issues with it not wanting to hold pressure, but a couple coats of nail polish on the welch plugs took care of that.I put on the stack muffler just for starting purposes, man is that saw loud! It's a runner! I've got to put a regular muffler on it yet & find a bar & chain for it & then it should be ready to go.I'll get some pics on here when the weather permits.

Today I put a NOS muffler on & had to hunt up the hardware for it,so that took a while.I couldn't find the AF cover,or the drivecase cover,so I borrowed them from another 101.I did find the drivecase cover later,it just got buried on my parts table.I had a helluva time getting the new handle to start oiling, but with persistence it paid off & is oiling nicely. This is quite a colorful saw.Red drivecase & throttle handle with blue, white,& black AF cover, recoil,& drivecase cover. What kinda baffles me is what Homelite 100 series saw was manual oiling only?I thought the 101 & early 102s were the only manual only saws in that series?I just looked on Acres' site & found the only red drivecase saw with manual only oiling was a 120 & 122,but those 2 saws were 57cc..Would a drivecase from a 57cc saw work on a 54cc saw?

It's been a while since I've updated thios thread. The 101 runs great.I had it out cutting in my back yard today (80+ degrees) cutting up cherry limbs that my neighbor dragged through the cornfield.I ran about 2 tanks of fuel through it & only had to step the idle up.I was really amazed at how well these little buggers rip through wood. You can be assured this saw will be part of my lineup. You may not be able to see,but most of this saw is red.The 101s were all blue. The only blue left on this saw is the drivecase cover, the recoil,& the AF cover.

I took this little gem out cutting today & noticed that the muffler was rattling.I pulled it apart after I got home & found that one of the mounting screrws had come completely out of the boss & was rattling around insider the muffler.Thank goodness it didn't get ingested into the cylinder.I'll try some Loctite on it & see if that helps. The other thing I noticed was the tank built up a pressure in it & after I released the pressure the fuel was boiling. The saw ran fine though, except the idle screw doesn't want to stay put.I've got other idle screws that I can try.

Check the threads carefully. They often are out because the cylinder threads are stripped. Heli-coil time.

I bought my first XL-12 in 1964. At that time i was cutting swamp Spruce with a C-9 Homelite. When i got the XL-12 it was like a toy, but it upped my stick count by 25%. Then later on i got the Super XL Auto, red & white, and then a green and red one came out, it had a little more power or rpm then the red & white one. At the time this was about the best to own, there a bullet prof ole saw. I ran-em strip cutting at -20 to -40 with no issues, or at 90 above. Threw the 60's i owned , C-5, C-7, C-9, XL-12, Super XL'S, 101, 104, 700, 800, 850, and a 10-10 MuCulloch, Lombard Lighting II, 08-S Stihl, 07 Stihl and a Stihl Contra Lighting, yes i used them all logging at one time or the other. I have a good running XL-12, and a XL-Super that needs a fuel line. I think you made a good trade. Now no mater what you buy you'll always have a back up saw that will run.
