I have an old super 2 chainsaw that was not running well. Hard to start but once i got it running, it was okay. Decided to put a carb kit in it and now i can get it started, still hard to start, but it will not idle. I have watched videos on how to adjust but cant keep it idling long enough to adjust screws. Will run wide open but as soon as i let off the throttle, it dies. Any suggestions?

Assuming an "old" Super 2 has both HI and LO mixture adjustment screws, gently turn them both in until they stop turning, don't force them. Then back them both back out one turn each. These will be the 2 screws right next to each other down below. The single screw, usually larger head up above, is the idle speed adjustment. Hold the throttle wide open and turn that screw all the way in. Now if it'll stay running, back the idle speed adjustment screw back out slowly until the engine idles down and the clutch releases.
If it still won't stay running with that idle screw turned all the way in, we'll have to figure out if it's flooding or dying out lean.

Thanks for the help. I got it running, with the screw turned all the way in but it dies as soon as I let off of the throttle.

So the last part of blythkd's response is now very pertinent...does the saw seem to be flooding out or running out of fuel? Sputtering & smoke indicates a flooding situation and rev and die out indicates lean.

I would say rev and die would describe it

Assuming the carb kit job all went well, sounds like an air leak. As old as these saws are getting to be, crank seals seem to be the flavor of the day.
Or back to the carb, could be a restriction in the lo side circuitry. Is it a Walbro carb?
Did you replace the fuel line and filter?
Could be weak pulse to the carb.

It is not a walbro. I believe it is a zuma carburator. I did replace all of the fuel and oil likes but did not replace fuel filter yet.

Oooh, Zama. I've worked on tons of Super 2's and XL's with Walbro carbs but don't recall many with Zama's. Most of the same concepts apply but I'm not much help on a Zama carb. I have the Walbro stuff memorized but don't recall much about a Zama.

Can I exchange a zama carb for a walbro carb? Would it be worth the expense?

You could, but I have found the Zama to be a decent carb. I'd run the Low screw all the way in and then open it 1 1/2 turn. If you cannot get it to idle near the setting, I'd guess that a gasket or diaphragm is reversed in the carburetor. The diagram on the right should be the detail for your carb. Thanks I will try that this weekend and if it doesn't work, guess I will take the carb apart and see what I did wrong. Thanks for your help.

Okay, I took the carb apart and switched diaphragms. When I did it the first time, I thought I replaced it with the one that was in the carb. Either I didnt or it had the wrong one in it from the beginning. Probably my error I'm thinking. After reassemble, it started and idled! I can run it at full throttle but when I put it under a load, try o cut something, it dies. Also smokes some but not to much. What kind of adjustments should I make. I really appreciate your help with this.

Dying out under load is typically an indication of the high sped being a bit too lean; I'd open the H screw up a 1/4 turn and see what happens.

Well I thought I had the problem fixed but now I can't get it started at all. May be time to just buy a new one.
