Hey guys, Picked up this beauty at an auction this week. The pictures online were pretty low-res so I was happy when I went to pick it up that it was actually in pretty good shape! The worst of it is the missing paint, but its not even too bad in that respect. Its labeled as a 5-30NAS, I am not sure what the AS stands for. After getting it home it seemed to have good compression, so I put a little mix in the carb and it popped right away! I put a little gas in the tank and got it running, but the carb definitely needs work. I got it running good at WOT but it wanted to flood out within 5-10 seconds of idling, and the only way to get it to start once it dies is to pull the plug and drain out the gas by tipping the saw up on end. It also would flood out without the engine running at all. I'm guessing a metering lever issue but not sure. This brings me to my first question- can anybody ID this carb? I wasn't able to find any numbers on it. It strikes me as a tillotson (maybe an HP-6A?) but that's just a hunch. Also, does this carb have a low speed adjustment? I am hopeful once I get the carb issue sorted out she will be a strong runner, based on how easily she cranked up. As a bonus it came with a nice 30" bar and some nearly brand new 9/16 chain!

Good deal Rowdy! I generally don't mess with the really old Homies.I keep trying to find a saw that's older than me,but no luck yet,the closest I've come is July 1958,I was born in June 1958.According to Acres it might have a Brown carb on it too.I'm not familiar with either the Tilly or the Brown carbs that were put on your saw.

Thanks Ed!
After looking around online it looks like my carb is a tilly hp-6a. It looks like Leon had similar flooding issues with his 5-30. The ice definitely got some fuel seeping from the gaskets, so first order of business will be a tear down and gasket kit.

No offense Al,but I have a problem with a chainsaw that uses a belt that I can't find anywhere.I'm sorry to say this, but I'm being honest - I'm drawn more to the older yellow & black saws.

Nice saws! Did your 5-30 have the rope start when you got it? Mine has the cable and it is in rough shape. I was debating putting a rope on it but not sure if the pulley is different.
You’re right about the belts Ed. I’m still hoping someday there will be a good aftermarket option.

The 5-30N had rope and my 20MCS have cables but I swapped them due to terrible kinks and bends.

Well tore the carb apart today and didn't take me very damn long to figure out why it was flooding. The spring for the metering lever was MIA. Not sure if somebody took it apart and lost or ?. Fortunately the rest of the carb looked good, no gum, diaphragms still somewhat pliable, gaskets OK. So I dug through my parts bin and found a spring that was about the right size. Had to trim the length a little bit but got it installed and seemed to work good. Threw everything back together and fired right up! Still need to do some fine tuning but have it starting, idling, and running good for now! Also need to figure out the recoil and put the air filter back on. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mrl3Rk6H0WA

Does your saw still have the little brush inside the air filter?

I think I will just switch to the rope. Seems like a less troublesome option. I’ll keep the cable I have in case I decide to switch it back.
I don’t think so- not sure what the brush is, but you can see clean through my air filter.

When I read that the carb was missing the metering lever spring my heart dropped. So glad you found a substitute & were able to get it running.Sounds pretty good, but justy a tad on the rich side on the lo.I know - you have fine tuning to do yet.

Thanks Ed! The low side was being a little touchy. Seemed like it wanted to bog with throttle if I leaned it out much more. I think a few hours cutting and some tweaks will get it right Put a new pull rope on and put a new plug in for good measure. Buttoned it all back up and started second pull. Great addition to the collection!

I also looked up the serial # (455643) which puts DOM in mid-late 1954. Definitely the oldest one of my bunch!
I also noticed on the IPL that the "A" behind the 5-30N indicates the saw was originally equipped with the long bucking spikes (they are pretty huge!), still not sure what the S means.

Leon has cables that might fit your application.
