youtu.be/u94sMwyLSXcThe link leads to a video of my xl which has increase in idle rpm when stop switch off. Coil is defective in that it will not ground out with stop switch, so I choke it to stop it. Just wondering why idle increases when I flip switch to off. Not really a problem but wondering what is the cause.

That's crazy! This is purely a wild-ass guess, but somehow it seems the timing is advancing when the switch is flipped off!

Maybe the “off” position weakens but does not eliminate the spark, so the fuel is burned a little slower, like retarding the ignition? This could be good at idle speeds? I should have tested max rpm with switch on and off- will try next week.

Not knowing for sure if this has been your saw since new or if you just picked it up, I wonder about a few things.
The no kill situation could be the ground. Since it's a plastic case saw, the switch has to be grounded to the engine. Have you checked that?
Could the switch be turned around? You'd have to be creative with the switch plate to turn the switch around since the plate is keyed to the switch, otherwise the plate would be upside down.
Have you ohm'd out the switch in both positions? That could shed some light on things.
That is a weird one, never seen anything like it. I seem to say that a lot anymore.

The saw is not originally mine, got from ebay not running went all through it carb kit/plug/lines cleaned points set coil gap. The stop switch stopped working while I was in the process of using it. Have had it apart multiple times.
Has metal grounding plate (unlike my other 3 xl’s) connecting switch to crankcase. It shows correct continuity with switch.
I put a used (bad) coil with same set-up, gave very weak spark on run, no spark on stop, indicating switch etc ok.
Now original coil installed good spark but won’t ground out.
Replaced switch with nos, but the old one tested good, as did all wires and connections, so I think coil defective (not grounding out.)

Sounds like you've got it. I don't think I've ever seen a coil lose continuity to the kill terminal.
