This is my third XL I bought for parts, an XL AO. Had 50psi compression which improved after cleaning piston ring groove to 100 psi.
Since it was pretty complete I got in running. Carb kit, lines, plug.
Its piston is a little bigger in diameter than my first XL, but same carb. The HDC on this saw does not have the extra fuel circuit through the throttle rod that my other XL does.
There is no UT or SN label, has a plastic grip bar. Plastic case.
It runs hot, like 450F at the muffler so I’ll try to richen it up as much as possible from the low speed (only available) carb mixture screw. I disassembled crankcase completely to get a good look at the piston, seals looked good, but I have not pressure/vacuum tested the crankcase.
I guess I could swap carbs with my other XL to see if that extra fuel circuit helps.
Is there anything else I should check if crancase pressures are ok? Do these saws run this hot normally? Should I try to drill out the main jet a little? It is .027

So I checked it out a little deeper and it apparently is running normal, as I checked temp at muffler again and getting more like 300F at sides of muffler, only real hot spot is center portion.
I was getting smoke from outside of muffler which I thought was plastic housing burning/melting but actually just bar oil slinging through previously melted holes in damaged housing.
I have repaired housing with heat-shield tape and pop rivets, should all be good now.
