I am new to this site and have enjoyed reading it very much. It has helped me through the well known boot replacement on a 330.
Anyway on to my question, I have heard about a “muffler mod” that can be done on the 330. Is this true and if so how do you do it? Is doing this harmful to the saw?

Hi JLS, welcome to the House!
If youre enjoying it now it should only get better!
The muffler mod will not hurt your saw, in fact it will help it do everything But save fuel. It will run cooler, cut better and probably last longer due to more fuel/oil passing through the saw which is what keeps it cooler.
On newer saws this is the first thing many serious users do is open up the muffler. Their way restrictive due to EPA regs and noise regulations not letting the manufacturers sell the saw in its most powerfull configuration.
With the older saws like we are discussing here, they didnt have the EPA breathing down their backs but they did have consumer safety in mind, hence the desire for a quiet muffler.
Opening up the muffler will make the saw louder and Ear protection will be manditory.
It wont make it so loud that people should complain though, this could be done of course, but your then going past the desired point of maximum power and just making noise.
If your interested, I could take some pics and show you whats involved.
Just say the word.

Muffler mod would be easy on a saw with a 'bolt-on' muffler like a 150. It becomes a little more involved on a 350/360 where the muffler is more or less buried in the saw. I have a 350 that needs the lower vibration isolators replaced. This might be the time to try a mod here. This muffler does not seem to be easily disassembled. I have removed the spark arrestor screens since fire is not much of a threat here in the humid East. Do not know if there are any baffles inside this muffler. Any suggestions?

I would be very interseted in seeing pictures of what it takes to mod the muffler. I guess i am a little concerned about taking to much out and just making a noise maker.
BTW: Thank you for all the great info on the sight.

On older saws, there is little to be gained by opening up the muffler...there isn't much there to open up. Newer saws are very restricted, these old dogs are pretty wide open in "stock" form.

Yeah, theres not as much as with the newer saws, but theres some in this muffler.
I cant remember the exact details, but I know there was a tube that went from one side (chamber) of the muffler to another that I modified.
This tube is 3/4" in diameter but is placed to within .100-.200 of the muffler case restricting flow.
Its a lil different than most other Homie mufflers Ive encountered.
Ill get some pics up of a modified and unmodified muffler for comparison.

Mark Well Mark, turns out we were both correct on this one! I just sold and took a trade in on the 330 that I have in the Muffler mod thread and Lo and Behold........ Its got an old school style muffler! Looks similar to the SXL/XL-12 style muffler than the other two 330's that I have. Looks like I may have to do a "Part Deux" of the 330 muffler mod if I can find something worthwhile to do with this style muff. .
