Got my fingers crossed for your Leon I can not begin to understand what it's like to have those fires so close and have to evacuate leaving 99% of your stuff behind.

Leon, Hope everything is still OK in your neighborhood. They had a spot on the news tonight, just as I got back from a trip to the east coast. Was wondering why the mail was not able to access your location!! Now it is all clear. Keep us all updated as you can, I know everyone here is praying for you. Mark

Thank you all! I am happy to say that we were able to come home last night and the only "loss" was a fridge and freezer full of rotten food. Given that around ~2400 single family structures in Talent & Phoenix were lost to this fire, I can handle some stinky food and a few hours of cleanup. Vast portions of Phoenix are still closed, as with Talent. Highway 99 is still closed for about an 7-mile stretch as the utility companies try to safe-off the sewer, gas and electrical connections at all these burned residences. Along Interstate 5, 200-300' sections of guard rail had the 6"X6" posts burned away like they never existed. It's really phenomenal how much damage occurred in one afternoon. Many of the people that lost it all are least able to handle this kind of tragedy...many low income trailer courts have been absolutely obliterated. It's one thing to see this on TV...seeing in your own town really brings it home. If anyone has an interest, the local sheriff's dept. did a helicopter flyover a couple days after the fire...they tour the source of the fire on the north end of Ashland and work their way north through Talent and then to my town, Phoenix. The overhead views to the south of Phoenix really drive home how lucky my neighborhood is to still be here. I'm also pasting the current evacuation map from the county...the green dot by the arrow is my street. The light pink shading is the approximate burn zone. Not everything in that zone burned, but in my best guesstimate, I'd say over 90% of the buildings in the zone were complete losses. I appreciate everyone reaching out...it has been much appreciated. I'm still picking up loose ends and seeing what services are operating in town. Once the Post Office is reliably open, I'll get the store back online again. I'm hoping sometime over the weekend, but no promises yet. Mac, I'll get a call in to you tomorrow...it was good to hear your message!

Good to hear you're back home again Leon.I was thinking of you & your family a lot these past few days.I'm sure your kids will bounce back from this rather quickly as kids do,but I'm sure it'll be embedded in their minds for the rest of their lives.First Covid, then the Great Fire,WoW what a yr.For you guys! Your loss of food in your freezer may be covered under your homeowner's ins.,it might be worth checking into. That's why you pay premiums.God Bless

No need to call Leon, just thought maybe your phone worked when everything else was down and we all wondered how things were. So glad to know that your house is still there, what a relief I am sure.

Leon, Glad to hear your place survived more or less intact. Don't envy you having to deal with spoiled meats though! Had a fridge that had spoiled meat in it one time and never could get rid of the smell.
I was getting a bit worried about the Homelite family as just last week Chainsawlady mentioned she had a run in with a cart at Wally World and was somewhat out of commission as well.
As a side note my wife has aunt and uncle just east of Medford and when late talked to them a couple days ago they were safe but edge of the fire was only a couple miles from them. In the pictures they sent it looked to be somewhat under control.
Again glad you're OK

Fires out here in my area are slowly smoldering down and wind was blowing them back into themselves. We also FINALLY got air support out here so all is looking good. Luckily no one out here I believe lost their homes but I'm not sure yet. Was nice to know Leon and his family got out and are ok and that the house is to! Been a crazy week that's for sure.

I’ve helped some this hurricane season with a few clean up projects south of where I live. We’ve had more hurricanes hit this year than we’ve had in a while none have been really bad though most damage was manageable. It did cross my mind numerous times though how the recovery behind those wildfires is going. I’ve never seen anything like that so I am curious how the recovery goes the news outlet never follow up with the recovery process much I know some behind these hurricanes take years. Is there anywhere up that way that accepts donations or anything?

Most everything is being handled by FEMA and the Red Cross now. FEMA & Oregon DEQ came to an agreement on how to handle the hazardous materials in our area and cleanup started a couple weeks ago. It'll take into winter, but as long as property owners signed off on a "permission to enter" form, all of the debris would be cleaned up at no charge to the owner. In the meantime, FEMA has identified several existing RV parks in the area that are going to be upgraded and used as temporary housing as rebuilding occurs. But there's a lot of hurdles to overcome before any building can start. The fire in my area almost surgically targeted low income housing...mobile home parks took the biggest hit. Many were designed and built in the 60's and so much of the that design doesn't meet current land use laws (# of entrances, road setbacks, etc...), so there's been some discussion around new layouts. Of the ~200 business that burned, I've only seen a handful start cleanup and only 2 I can think of has setup temporary facilities to operate. I'd say the recovery from this will be exactly like recovery from a hurricane: many years later, there will still be people displaced and it will never be quite the same.
