Hello, I was given the task of getting this UT-20531 trimmer running again. I am trying to get the two plastic engine covers apart. I have removed every screw that holds the two engine covers together. The engine moves freely inside the covers. I can not for the life of me get these plastic covers off. Has anyone ever done this before. T have looked at parts diagrams and all screws are accounted for. Any help appreciated.

Well I've never worked on one, but I've had the engine housings come through the store and I've never seen any type of clip retainer system, so the screws should be it. I'm assuming you already have the starter off? I'd start down by the drive tube and work up...if it starts to come apart there, you may be able to work your way back and see what's still holding it up. If it isn't a missed screw, the plastic must have somehow welded itself in a spot or two. Let us know what you find!

Did you get the 2 screws hiding behind the muffler? Other than that, iirc the 180 would have the on/off toggle switch up on top of the handle like the 160 has. The other option was the momentary kill switch back on the starter housing like the 165's and 260's had. If it has the toggle switch on top of the handle, the switch nut squeezes down on both housing halves, holding the two halves together somewhat. You can usually pry the housing halves apart up by the switch without having to loosen the nut. It's usually better to pry them apart without loosening the nut if you can since you have to bend a tang on the switch plate to free the nut. That aluminum tang is pretty much a one time use deal.
We didn't have any 180's in our area but we had tons of 160's, 165's and 200's and a few 260's, which is what I still run. They're all basically the same design with different power levels, handle designs, drive setups and stringhead styles. I'm thinking the 180 was a variation of the 160 so that's what I'm basing my comments on. It'll come apart though, no black magic involved. If you're not missing a screw, it just needs some persuasion.
