You could start at the carb adjustment but I am suspicious of other issues. If you find yourself needing to constantly change the carburetor adjustment then report back. It could be a simple fuel mixture problem so you just want to start at the beginning and check everything. If that never changed and it just started running like that all of a sudden then you could have more work to do.

I suspect that rather than a fuel issue you're having an ignition issue. Is your saw points or electronic ignition? Also, your saw is not a Super XL-12,it's either a SXL or an XL-12.

I don't know what color they came in but they were discontinued in 1970 so red would not be out of the question. www.acresinternet.com/cscc.nsf/ed1d619968136da688256af40002b8f7/5dfa9d49152e3dd988256b8b00520cbc Try richening up the carb some, if that does not do it, check for spark right after it dies. Do not let it cool off so you will want to have the tools you need at the ready while you run it. Check back in after you try fiddling with the mixture screws on the carb or if you find the spark goes away when it is hot. Welcome to the House of Homelite.
