So I took the saw down a bit and noticed that there's a lot of residual oil buildup on the outside of the cylinder and around the compression release valve so that might be an issue. I noticed that I have a bit of scoring on the p&c but not terrible but if I need a new piston and rings should I do LRB or Proline? I looked but wasn't able to find any one else offering the 46mm piston. Any suggestions?
Thanks again, Al D. P.S I found the $85 one on feebay but not that hard up...yet!

Try Bob Johnson in Maryland,N,Y,He might have an actual Homelite piston kit.I'll bet it's between $50-$60 if he has one.607-638-9297

I will second Bob for the parts, he is great to work with!
What’s the compression? If the scorings light it may not affect anything. Possibly a leak at the decomp causing oil to get in the outside of the cylinder and burn off?

I had an XL-103 that had a sticking & plugged decomp valve.I got the thing working freely by shooting some WD40 around it & working it.It took a bit to get it unplugged though. Finally after digging around gently with an ice pick (is there such a thing?Lol),I pulled on the recoil about 3 times & heard a loud ping as the hardened carbon broke loose & hit the washing machine.Lol I put the decomp back in & it worked great after that.Fortunately the carbon didn't do any damage to the piston or cylinder.

I think they are a bit better quality. I’ve never really heard a lot of good feedback on the LRB stuff. I’ve used two of their piston and ring sets. One on a Super Mini. It’s had been ok so far. It’s hardly broken in yet so a bit early to judge. I didn’t not have good results with the 46mm piston on my XL-130, but that probably was due to my bad crank seal installation during the break in. In the future I will likely avoid the LRB stuff.....

Sometimes if he's really busy trying to get orders out & do some wrenching he'll take the phone off the hook or not answer, but that doesn't happen very often.Mon.is his busiest day of the week,I usually try to avoid calling him on Mon.Ya gotta understand too that he just turned 80 in Feb.,so not quite as full of piss & vinegar as he was in his younger days.I'm glad you were finally able to get through to him,he's a great guy.I'm going down to visit him later this month, always a great time.
