Good morning: Like it says, rope not retracting. I've taken off the starter assembly several times to wind it tighter. While the starter is off the saw, it recoils just fine. Put the starter back on, and it won't retract. Do these springs go bad? Saw is a good saw, very powerful engine that is still tight, not ready for the trash heap yet. Besides, it was my father's saw, and I want to keep it working.
Anyone know of a good repair guy in eastern PA that works with Homelites?
Thank you.

Check that the rope knot isn't hanging out and catching the flywheel screen studs...that's the most common cause of what you are describing.

Is there any follow up with the issue, did you fix it? Funny I just watched Leon's video of the blue XL having a issue with the recoil.

Yeah, she's all fixed and running. The big problem I was having was not being able to seat the rewind pulley because the spring was so chewed up. I guess the spring unraveled too many times and got all bent up. I replaced it with one of the updated springs that comes in a little case and doesn't unravel suddenly. Leon's video with the Super Blue was great. I've never seen a repair video with so much detail, but it was detail I needed. Now on to replacing carb gaskets and fuel line. Sure does wake up the neighbors now.

You must have a stack muffler on it.
