That ones in need of some cleaning for sure! That junk builds up over time, but my main concern would be the amount in the air box. I’d have to imagine for that amount to build up the saw was run at one point without an air filter. Although the piston looks okay, I’d run a compression check before your go too far.
Looks like you’ll need a new flywheel for sure. The most common option for converting to electronic ignition would be an ignition chip, available from several online sellers. That model saw is not one I’m familiar with, but there may be oem parts to convert to electronic if the saw was available with electronic ignition. Somebody else will be much more help there.
I’d start by cleaning all the connections and filing and gapping the points. If the saw then has good spark I’d just stick with the points setup, but that is just me.
Post up some pics as you get it cleaned up!

I don’t have a compression tester to know for certain but when I was pulling on the rope it wasn’t much different than my super xl 925. I believe it will be good enough to get the job done.

I believe the hardest part I am going to be looking for is the clutch side cover. I am going to work at taking it back to xl 700 side covers.

Could these side covers possibly be original? I ask because they are equally beat up and the worn marks and scratches do cross between the covers and the main part of the saw. I guess they could have been changed early in the saws life.
I am actually surprised that the air box cover seems to have received the least amount of damage.

Just because there are a couple of fins broke off the FW doesn't mean you have to change it & get a new one.You won't even know the difference between that rotor (unless it's missing a substantial amount of fins) & a new rotor. The fins were put on the rotor for cooling purposes, not for balance. How many fins are missing? That sure is one of the dirtiest air boxes I've ever seen.I can't believe there wasn't any damage done to the engine.Just out of curiousty, what color is your saw?

About 1/3 of the fins are missing. Looks like a hammer was used on it. The color is a blue grayish. It is filthy but definitely a bluish saw. the starter side cover is showing red white and green. I believe the green was painted overtop at least some of the red. The clutch side is red white and the handle is green.

The link isn't working,at least for me anyway.
If you have that many fins missing then I do believe it's time to replace it!
The XL-700 came in 2 different color schemes. The most common color was blue.I have an XL-700 that I bought last fall & it's red, white,& green. There was a former member here who argued with me up & down that my saw wasn't an XL-700 because it wasn't blue,& the parts were just added on from another saw,but that wasn't the case.

The XL-700 in either color scheme is a fairly rare saw, very cool. I'm glad your giving it the attention it needs!
That picture of the airbox just makes me cringe. I would suggest borrowing a compression tester (or, if you intend to do more of this type of work, consider buying one, they can be had for about $20) and check the compression. I'm not trying to be negative or anything like that- I Would hate to see you get all the new parts and have to tear back down anyway. I'd also make sure you thoroughly inspect the reeds as they can be damaged by ingesting debris as well.

I think when everyone tells me to test the compression then I probably better do it. They probably know more than I do. This was about 4 or 5 pulls when the rope broke.

That's not too bad considering how dirty the air box was. 130lbs should be plenty to make it run.

If it was only on 4 pulls & a dry cylinder it's probably pretty good.Take your muffler off & take a look at the piston & cylinder, that'll give you a pretty good indication of how everything is.

Everything I need to get it running again should be on its way for the most part. I want to replace both the starter and clutch side covers with correct color matching side covers but that might take a while. For now I will probably have to live with red ones or consider doing a full repaint but I prefer original paint.

I need a side cover for a XL 700. I have a one owner that still runs like it is new. I got it from a friend who’s dad bought it new back in the 70s. It hasn’t ran in 40 years. I put fuel in and pulled out the choke, it tried to fire on the second pull. I pushed in the choke and it started the next pull. Hard to believe. It is missing the side cover. Does anyone know where I can pick one up? I am thinking about restoring. Are these saws worth anything? Just curious. My email address is philiphampton1953@gmail.com Any help will be appreciated. Is there any other cover that will fit this saw off of another model? Thanks Philip396
