The XL-130 has been sitting for over ten years. I cannot pull it through with the spark plug installed. Removal of the plug allows the machine to pull through easily. What's up?

Welcome to the House of Homelite .
Is it the correct spark-plug ? If not, is the reach too long allowing it to contact the piston ?
Early models used a CJ6 , later models a J7 or RJ7.
Does it have an ID tag with the Type and Serial number ?

Welcome to HOH! It sounds like the saw has some oil in the cylinder....try removing the plug and pulling it over quickly 7-8 times to clear it out.

Only thing I'd add, is while you have the plug out, check to see if it has spark. If it does, pour a little fuel mix down the plug hole, put the plug back in and see if it fires. After 10 years I would be surprised if it will draw fuel from the tank and run. But, it might.

Does it have an ID tag with the Type and Serial number ? It's a type 50050 ser no. 3178T117 J7 plug. With no plug, it pulls trough fine, very little effort. My local Stihl dealer suggested it might be getting fuel through an open needle valve causing it to hydro lock.

It's a type 50050 ser no. 3178T117 J7 plug. With no plug, it pulls trough fine, very little effort. Thanks for the response ! It's near 47 years old ( built: Wednesday, June 27th, 1973 ) , and has sat for over 10 years . Likely the carburetor has issues .. varnish, stuck fuel inlet needle, stiff diaphragms, etc. If fuel is coming out the muffler, the plug is wet, or fuel dribbles out the plug hole with the cylinder tipped down, it's time to inspect the carburetor.
