Hi to everyone. I bought this XL new in the early 80's. Used it to cut trees off fences and clear a trail to the creek, mostly. All that had been done to it for about 30 years was sharpen the chain and run it. Never touched the carburetor. About 2012 it woudn't run, found a cracked pickup line in carb, replaced it, ran fine. Let it set 6-8 years, in 70 degree controlled temp room. Put fresh non-ethanol gas in it, now the choke must be on to keep it running. Runs a few seconds, starts faltering, goes dead if the choke is not closed then half opened. It ran fine after replacing the pickup tube. What happened? Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like the carb could use a good cleaning or a possible rebuild.Unfortunately nothing lasts forever. When the line cracked it probably sucked in all kinds of crud & is now plugging the screen in the carb, that's why you need the choke on,it's starving for fuel.

I was leaning towards rebuilding the carb, but was thinking that ethanol gas might have set in the carb causing trouble. Does ethanol in gas cause trouble if left in carburetors?

Yes!!! Fuel pump diaphragm is probably hard and other issues. Took the carb apart, screen is clean and diaphragm flexes when I blow and suck through the metal plate holding it. There was plenty of gas in the carb when I pulled the diaphragm cover.

Was the fuel old or fresh?

The gas in the carb looked ok, I can't smell due to a concussion years ago. I'll put it together and put some gas in that I know is fresh, after cleaning the tank on the saw. Today, when I poured the gas out of the saw, some of it looked cruddy. Thanks

With good spark, fresh fuel,& good lines & a carb in good shape, along with good compression should be a running saw.
