I learned one of those “need to know” tricks today that I wanted to share. It’s so simple that I can’t believe I struggled with this before. I’ve broken recoil springs and disassembled starters and made this a lot more work than it needs to be. youtu.be/x4E0NuRFLaw

I could really use this video, but youtube tells me it is private and I can't see it, even if I'm logged on to youtube

Not to be too critical of the guy doing the video but he made it looks more difficult than it really is.
And one more point, some recoil starters don't have that handy little notch to let you do this. So if you have a Dremel tool with small burr or grinding stone you can make that mod in a few seconds!

Criticism accepted! The intent of the video was to share just how simple it is. I’m not sure how I over complicated it? I have to admit that I never due tutorial style videos so I would like to know how I could revise this so that it’s a simple as possible. That’s a great tip about making a notch if you don’t have one!

Of all people, the first guy I actually saw do this trick was our local Maytag appliance serviceman back when I was just a kid, and I never forgot it.

I had a fellow member here show me this trick about 2 yrs.ago & have had to do this many times to recoils.I just had to remember how to do it.Lol I found that if you go the wrong way it'll end up looser than when you started.I pretty much thought that all the "pros" knew this trick.I can't wait to show this to my brothers.

BTW,I didn't think your video was overly complicated at all.Pretty much straightforward & to the point.

Another old post worth reviving,it could have been done quicker, but then everyone in the audience would have been saying…what did he do?….Howd he do that? …He used mirrors….good post, thank you,you learn something everyday ,wether you want to or not, even reading through old posts!
