I was starting up a few saws this afternoon just for fun. I decided to fire up my 707D just because it's such a good runner. It hasn't run in a while so it took about 10 pulls to start. I took it off partial choke to soon and it died. When I tried to restart it, the recoil wouldn't grab. It retracts fine but won't engage. 😞 Before I attempt to diagnose the issue, is there a common problem with the ball drive starter that I should look for?

I'm still hearing crickets... Anyone, anyone??? My 770G does the same thing occasionally. I lean it to the right a little and smack the center of the recoil. Usually works for me. Not really a fix but so far has worked.

Well I'll be darned. I tipped the saw to the right and tapped the recoil and it engaged. For what I do with this old saw, that will be just fine! Thanks again clasec

I'm still hearing crickets... Anyone, anyone??? This is a common problem with this recoil starter. After a long time there is a buildup of grease and dirt around the the three balls on the recoil. The balls stick in the dirt and don't move down to connect. A removal of balls and a thorough clean out will probably make them like new. chainsawlady

They made a newer version of the brass ball drive plate that had relief slots at the base of the ball pockets to allow dirt and debris to exit.
