Well I finally found myself a big homelite and what appears to be a Canadian saw to boot. Found this one languishing on OfferUp for $15 under the pretense it had no compression. Well one does not simply pass up an offer like that so I went and had a look, turns out the starter just wasn’t engaging, I ended up paying the gentleman $25 for it so that my conscience could remain clear and got to work cleaning.
Before pictures:
Saw looked like it had sat outside a while, chain and bar had started to become one. Also looks like it had been rode pretty hard and put away covered in dust, but it’s got it where it counts, piston and cylinder are nice and clean and just about yanked the saw into my face first time I went to pull on it.
Did find a few faults though, one hidden under the weird add on metal shielding on the muffler, looks like the strap that went over the muffler was torn off leaving a hole, nothing some time with the tig welder won’t fix. The other was slightly more serious, the saw used to have a full wrap handle but at some point half of it was violently removed. The upper mount has one bolt hole broken out of it and the lower mounting holes are both stripped except for the bottom 1/4 in of thread. I was able to find some slightly larger metric bolts to hold the bottom together and have just converted it to a standard handle with the parts that were present.
Pictures of previous repair:
Whoever did this must have a PhD from Hackjob University. If I can find the pieces for a reasonable price I’ll put a full wrap back on it but for now it’s solid and it works.
Assorted other pictures:
Obligatory ut and serial number pic:
For now the saw runs like a bat out of hell and I wasn’t able to come close to stalling it in my test log with the 24 in bar that’s on it. Saw appears to have been either a municipal saw or company saw out of the Portland Gresham area as it has engravings on it, will get pics of those after I give the whole thing the spit shine treatment.
That’s all for now though- Brennan
