What is that little brass screen that I punctured with the little snap ring that I lost do in the carburetor base Facing the intake? It looks like it goes near the throttle shaft.

That's the check valve...there should be small round piece of diaphragm material under there. If not, you are looking at a 93910 check valve kit. If the valve is still there, a K10-HDC kit comes with a new screen.

If this check valve is missing could this be why this saw will randomly die at idle? Like no gas all of a sudden but then start right up again?

In the first pic ( HDC-4 .. 1970 vintage ) the pin is pointing to the hole with the screen, it's been removed. Visible is the hole through the throttle shaft, when it's held wide open. The passage leads to a "Limiting Jet" , according to Super EZ IPL:24522 . The second pic shows the pin in the limiting jet that the IPL refers to .. ( I'm guessing, did not test ).

Ah, my bad...5terrysupersaws nice catch! So that screen is there to prevent garbage from being drawn into the carburetor as the throttle shaft opens.

Funny how things work out. I’m actually just finishing up a Super Mini year down and reassemble. Just opened up the Walboro HDC 64 on my 83 model and it has all the same mystery parts. First time I’ve seen this set up on a HDC.
Separate question: Are the main nozzle check valves resistant to carb cleaner?

You should be OK with the carb cleaner if you do not allow it to soak for long. Blow it out in both directions, so that it dries quickly. Not many elastomers are resistant over the long haul to serious solvents.
