You should probably just get a rebuild kit.I know mine had a Tillotson carb on it & they're fairly easy to rebuild. You also might have an ignition issue, the points might be dirty so clean them & set the gap at .015.A new condenser might also be needed. If you take care of those 3 things your 923 should go on for another 30 yrs.The carb kit needed is an RK23HS & they're plentiful on Ebay. You most likely won't find a new carb for it,& if you did it'd be too expensive.

i recently replaced the ignition coil so i assumed it wasnt that. if i do need to pull the carb out how would i go about doing that.

does position of the saw effect it's running it may be carb issues or it may be an air leak somewhere.

If you have poor connections or a poor ground it could very well be your problem. Was your saw acting the same before you replaced the coil?

where would it be leaking air from If the crankshaft seals are worn it will cause the saw to run erratic when tilted from side to side. Air can be drawn into the engine causing it to lean out.

OK that explains a lot then. Most likely you'll need to clean & gap the points & rebuild the carb. When a saw sits for an extended period of time the points will get tarnished & oxidize. Also,if fuel was left in the saw while setting it does nasty things to the carb, especially if it had ethanol in it.

The easiest way without a vacuum test would be to start the saw and while at idle tilt it onto its side to see if there is a change in idle quality. After reading your first post I myself would clean or replace the fuel tank filter.

Your would have to hook the fuel line in the tank through the fill cap and pull out the hose. The weighted filter is at the end.

Shine a light in the tank & you should see the fuel line with the filter attached to the end.I use a wire with a hook on the end to grab a hold of the line & pull it up out of the tank. The points are located under the flywheel, you must pull it to access the points & condenser.
