If it is not one thing it is something else. I was trying to get the saw started today after adjusting the carb, and when I pull the rope it just rotates freely. I took the recoil off and cleaned the inside of the cup with brake cleaner as it was very dusty and slick. I noticed that the inside was worn down where the dogs bite in. I have it back working ok, but realize that it will most likely happen again. Are there any tricks to getting them back into good working shape, or do I need to order a new cup?

The dogs may need a light sharpening. Someone will probably be along to explain how. Another thing I've seen is to scribe lines/ grooves into the cup for the dogs to catch.

I'd pull the starter and check to make sure the two fiber washers aren't soaked in oil before assuming the cup is bad. The shoes won't index if those washers get slick.

So can you just spray the heck out of that area with break cleaner without taking it apart, and hope you get them clean?

You'd probably get the upper one reasonably clean, but the lower one is pretty hard to reach. I'd definitely recommend disassembly.

How deep is the groove in the cup? The shoes will only reach so far.

How deep is the groove in the cup? The shoes will only reach so far. It was basically like a scratch done with a scribe or sharp center punch about every 1/4 inch. Don't know if it helps or not. If I find that cup, I'll post a picture

How deep is the groove in the cup? The shoes will only reach so far. It is only worn the thickness of a couple of pieces of copy paper. You can feel the ridge but it is not cut deep. Steve

That amount of wear isn't excessive...the cup should be fine.

Ok I have my carbs back and the recoil is acting up again. I have it apart and have the fiber washers out. What do you clean them with? Is break cleaner ok or is that too strong. Gas, denatured alcohol, etc? Also do you soak them for a period or just spray them down with cleaner. One other question can you flip the shoes. When I have the recoil off and pull the cord all I see is one side of each shoe kick out. I am not talking about flipping the entire assembly, but just the shoes. I am thinking perhaps one side may be a tad longer. Thanks Steve Edit update I think I have the recoil back working.... Steve

The washers need to be as dry as possible. Do not use carb cleaner, it sometimes contains lube. Brake clean has always worked for me.
The pawls or shoes should be sharp on the end that contacts the cup. If they are dull they will slip and wear. The cup will last longer of the pawls are sharp and dig in without slipping.

You were dead on. I sharpened the shoes and it works like new now. Thanks Steve
