Ok I just got off the phone with a nice person at Oregon chain. We determined I have a 10 AC, 1/2" pitch, .063 gauge, 63 drive links chain. They have not made that chain in a long time. Does anyone have any ideas where one might could be found. BTW this would be for a "Super Wiz 66". I have just acquired these two Homelite Bow saws. The "Super Wiz 80" had the chain, so I am good with that one, and I am assuming the 66 used the same chain, but correct me if I am wrong there.....

1/2 pitch chain hasn’t been made since the early 80’s. Finding any is just luck. Personally I would convert to 404 x .063. You only have to change the sprocket to use 404.

So instead of an 8 tooth sprocket I would have to go to a 7 tooth??

The last I knew last yr.the going price for 1/2 in.chain was $1 per link.If you could find any 1/2 in.chain,it'll be quite costly to put a new chain on it.I don't really see any advantages of using 1/2 in.over .404.I do know a guy who has a half roll of 1/2 in.if you're still interested PM me.

All I know is at this point my Super Wiz 80 has a 1/2" pitch chain, and an 8 tooth sprocket. The Super Wiz 66 I got did not have the chain or sprocket with it. I do have the bow bar though. So it works out well for me to get a new sprocket that I can find chains for. I just need to know for sure what sprocket to order, and where to find the .404 chain. I do not even know at this point what length chain I need.

The IPL indicates Part # 70353 for the sprocket. There appears to be one on ebay right now, but may be able to get a NOS one from one of the members here too.
You can find the .404 chain almost anywhere. The easiest thing would be to take the saw into a saw shop if you have one nearby. They can build a chain with the right number of links to fit. Obviously you would want to have the sprocket on before that.
If that's not an option, you can measure and get roughly where you need to be. What you would want to do was figure out the total length needed going around the bar and the drive sprocket, similar to how a chain would sit. I'd recommend doing this with the tensioner pretty close to the back (eg loose). To figure out the drive links needed you would double the pitch and then divide your length by that number.
For instance, if you came up with 48" (just using a random number here), you would divide 48 by .808" (.404 * 2) and come up with 59.4 links needed, or 60 rounding up. If you're going with 1/2 chain its a little easier since you just divide by 1 (1/2 * 2 is 1), so you would need 48 links of 1/2 pitch chain. In either case I'd probably add 1-2 links just to give a little wiggle room, but you don't want to get too long as the chain will probably stretch.
In all honesty, especially with the bow bar, probably best to just have a shop make up a chain if at all possible.

Ok if I am going to use the .404 chain, what sprocket do I need. I am getting really confused with the sprocket issue. From what I am hearing there must be different size 8 tooth sprockets.

That’s correct. The amount of teeth on the sprocket does not necessarily determine what pitch chain it is designed for. The 70353 will work with .404 chain and I believe it is 8 tooth.

These are not Homelite NOS, but reproduced and are high quality.

One thing I think I am going to have a hard time finding is the plate adjustment mechanism. The part that you hold the bar on with and adjust the bar. Why it was not with the saw is anyone's guess. The saw it's self is very complete, with the exception of a few parts in the local of where the bar attaches, and of course the sprocket. This saw has been sitting since 1996 when my friend died. Who knows what he was doing with it at the time. Perhaps he was faced with the chain issue and was in the process of modifying for a different chain. The parts may very well be at his house somewhere in a box, but I can't call his widow again and ask for more. She was nice enough to give me the two saws.

Nice saw.
I bet if you told her the problem, she would be delighted to help you look around. Explain to her that you want to put it back together like her husband had it.

Super Wiz 66-80 IPL's call for a 55551-2 Adjustment Plate, some 55551-B plates on eBay that may be the same thing.
Check the Adjusting Plate on your Super Wiz 80 to see what number it has.
55552-1 Adjuster Pin ... available at Leon's .
82219 Adjuster Screw . 81235 Adjuster Nut.
55593-3 8-tooth 1/2" pitch sprocket. .. If you want to go the 1/2" pitch chain route.

Back to the chain, is there a formula for figuring out lengths? Like if my chain has 63 drive links and it is a 1/2" pitch, and I want to switch to .404 chain. How many links would be on a .404 chain. Or does it work that way?

A DL pitch is 3 rivets length per DL divided by 2 (1/2"=.5)x2= 1.0" per DL times 63dl= 63"length (.404")x2=.808"per DL
63"/.808"per DL = 77.97029703DL or 78dl did I get this right? The only extra consideration is the different sprocket running diameter difference from 1/2 to .404

I've found Oregon 1/2 pitch chain at saw shops. Had a distributor for the shop I work for call around and within 2 days I had 30 feet of new chain sent to me. Chain roll pop up on ebay every so often but be prepared to over pay for it. There's someone on ebay that has or makes .404 sprockets for these gear drives. I converted 3 of mine to .404 with those sprockets.
