Not long ago I was able to get my XL-500 running with doing basically no work to it. It starts pretty easy and idles nice. When I tip it so the clutch side is down, it dies instantly. Is this a for sure sign of a bad seal or could it be fuel related since I've done nothing to the lines or carb?

Have you at least changed the fuel filter? Ed

Nope. It's an old wick style and all I did was fill it with premix and let it sit for a couple weeks. After that it fired right up

I forgot about the 500's having the wick filter. You can convert the saw over to a regular filter if need be.I don't really know what shape the filter is on my 500 yet.I've got a SXL-12 & a Pioneer 1100 that have the wick filters in.Same as you,I put fuel in the tanks & got them to fire up after only sitting overnight.Nasty smell from all that old 30 wt oil.Lol Ed

Guess I still haven't got an answer. Do I need to do some fuel system work or do I have a definite crank seal issue?

You could do a pressure test, that will tell you for sure if your seals are bad. Ed

If it dies instantly it's very likely a seal. If it was a fuel delivery issue it would not die immediately. It would take some seconds before the fuel in the line was used up.
If it was my saw the seals would get changed.

Been a while since doing anything with the xl-500. I convinced myself that it should have the crankseals replaced as it would die when tipped. For whatever reason today, I fired it up. I let it warm up and tipped it with clutch side down and it died instantly like before. I started it again and throttled it up while tipping it. It didn't die! After doing that, I can tip it at idle and it keeps running nice. Maybe I lucked out on this one!

Forgot to mention that I didn't replace the seals. Must have been a fuel delivery issue. 🤞
