The Walbro service manual is an excellent resource and explains how butterfly valve diaphragm carbs work and how to trouble shoot. If you just read the first 10 pages (with illustrations) you should understand how they work at all stages of throttle application. The service manual here, app.box.com/s/vee4p32zuxpb2xnfvlm05wjaibsizekkCarb specific manuals here which don't really have a good explanation of how they work. www.walbro.com/service-manuals/It's a good idea to start downloading the manuals you want as Walbro seems to be slowly removing "do it yourself" information a bit at a time from their site.

Hey guys, I am currently rebuilding a HDC-4 Homelite Textron (Walbro) carb obtained off E-bay. I don't see any sign of a ck valve under the screen nor is there any black residue from one that may have deteriorated. My question is do all Walbro HDC carbs utilize a ck valve or are there exceptions? Don't know if it is relevant or not, but this carb is a 1973 model off a Super EZ. Thanks in advance!

I opened my HDC-4 and there is definitely a check valve in there. Can you please post a picture. Use simpleimageresizer.com to reduce the image size below 1 megabyte.

Also, do not replace the check valve just to replace the check valve. Rebuild your carb without changing check valve and see if it works. Also, I fully disassemble all of my carbs and run them through an ultrasonic cleaner with 100 degree water mixed with Dawn dish detergent for 5 minutes. It cleans everything and gives the best results every time. If your carb isn't working after the rebuild, chances are it's still dirty/gummy or has some other problem. I don't think check valves go bad all that often. Leon, the site administrator, has videos on youtube on how to test the check valve. You should watch them before you do anything. The link for Leon's HDC check valve test is: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sV35OCH3ZE
