I finally got a chance to get my XL-2 carb back together and did the first ever test run with it since I purchased it. I'll have to say that I'm really impressed. Its a little gremlin! Ran two tanks through it and buried it in some fat trees that tested the 16" bar on it. Two words....She cuts!
Background: The guy that sold it to me said he couldn't get it to run. I put a walboro HDC rebuild kit into it. Messed up the check valve when trying to change the screen. (that sucked) changed it out and installed new check valve assembly. New fuel filter and lines. Got it fired and tuned nice. One problem. When its tipped down or on its side the engine races. Is that a sign of seals or a air leak somewhere else?

Air leak. Very likely a seal when it's tipped on it's side or turned upside down.

Well darn it. What kind of a job is it to change them out on this model? Can you do it without pulling the crank out?

It shouldn't be too bad. You'll have to pull the motor out of the case (at least for the clutch side) which I found pretty easy. On clam shells it's not a bad idea to put a very little bit of sealer like Permatex Motoseal (best buy at Canadian tire) around the seal case to make sure it seals in the pocket.
I wouldn't be splitting the case unless the bearings are bad.

Ok, thanks. I've already had it out of the casing once to rebuild the carb, oil lines and fuel system and sprocket and duck bills. I don't have any reason to think that the bearings are bad so that makes it a bit simpler.
So flywheel removal and clutch removal to access both seals?

Yes, but a pretty straightforward job once you have it torn down. I'd compare it to something like a rear main on a car engine, most of the work is teardown and reassembly!

Does anybody know of equivalent crank seals for these models? I'd rather not pay 20 bucks on ebay for nos.
