I'm wondering if this could be a reed issue? It wouldn't take much to have a look at the reed to make sure it's clean,or not be broken in some way. Ed

Did you try running after switching the screws back? If they were wrong it definitely would not run good. If its only running on choke thats indicative of fuel not wanting to get through (hence the lean condition requiring the choke). Will the saw run differently if you give it throttle? I have run it with needles in both positions. It barely runs with the needles reverse. Maybe I'll take a video tonight for you guys to see and hear what's going on. In the long run this will turn out to be something stupid, it always is. I'm attaching a picture of the tillotson HL manual that shows the long slender needle as being the low side mixture screw. Item number 7 in the pic.

Check out the IPL diagram here: www.leonschainsawpartsandrepair.com/uploads/3/9/7/9/39792537/homelite_c-51_chainsaw_ipl__1970__112345.pdfThe IPL is for a C51 but, will give you a better visual of the carb and it's parts on Page 6. The low needle is listed part# 58680, High is 58536. You can Google the part numbers to see what the low and high needles look like. If it were me, I would start with replacing the fuel lines, make sure the carb is rebuilt with all of the components in the proper order....I would also agree with Ed, check the reed valve...and finally replace the crank seals. I've seen reed valves that had so much corrosion around them that they would not seal properly. I guess I have been pretty lucky when working on these but, I always replace fuel lines, seals, gaskets and put in a complete carb kit regardless of the condition. Hope this helps.

Yeah good call. I will start with a carb kit and inspect the red valves.
