What size bolt are these flywheels drilled for. This is a recoil housing bolt, and it threads into the flywheel easy. I think every Homelite has these bolts in them, the 5/16 head. The guy at the hardware store said they are common 1/4X20 bolts. The 1/4X20 bolts will not screw into the flywheel. They go in about 1 turn and bind up. I need three of them about 3" long for my puller.

If 1/4 x 20 is too large , and 10 x 24 is too small , they will be 12 x 24 . Not a common size in most hardware stores .
McMaster-Carr shows a very small selection of 12 x 24 bolts but has all-thread rods in 12 x 24 . Unfortunatlly , only in
in low grade steel .

Thanks, I was looking for 12X24 and they did not have them. Low grade steel is fine, it doesn't take much to pull them. I could screw my Homelite bolt into a 1/4X20 nut and it was loose and wobbly. The Homelite bolt would not screw into the size gauges they have at the hardware store.

I like to use a spare set of Super XL starter bolts, which are 12-24.

12-24 are getting harder to find. For flywheel puller bolts I ran a 12-24 thread die over a Gr 5 1/4-20 bolt. It didn't seem to bother the die and it worked well.

Not sure where you are located, but i found all kinds of lengths of them at a menards store. It is a store like a home depot in the midwest and further i think. I had the same issue as you. Dan

OK, I went by my buddy's shop. He ran a thread chaser threw the flywheel and said they are 1/4X20. So, I'm going to run my tap threw some more and see how they work. Will up date. HOLD THE BOAT. On on my other thread Leon said they are 12X24 and that XL starter bolts are long enough and work well. Gonna go try that just to see.

Try a 1/4-20 nut on the pawl studs.

This is a C51, no pawl studs. Teach me to pay attention, some how I missed the posts you and Leon had about the 12-24.Leon confirmed that they were 12-24 on my thread about the C51. My fault for getting 2 threads going on the same saw. I did get the chip in the saw and it runs. Thanks, Tim and Leon.
