Was looking at mikes acres site and it says max rpm 8000rpm,my question is what rpm should I see on my digital tach while in the cut.Seems to me saw is running lean ,plug is grey not tan, tank had some crud in it and was plugging filter.Cleaned tank and filter thinking this would cure my lean problem but it still seems lean ,tach was running around 8000 while in the cut.Not sure what to think of tach as it was just a $20 unit,it seems a little slow to refresh, any input would be great....bob

Those digital tachs are usually pretty good, but I'm also not convinced that much of the data on Acres' website is accurate either.
Have you tried adjusting the high speed jet? Should be 4 cycling (sounds like a miss) when at WOT not under load and clear up when under load.
Running lean at high speed is an easy way to wreck a 2 cycle quickly, if in doubt I'd richen up the high mix. I've never tuned equipment by RPM (not chainsaws anyway), only by ear.

Check: the fuel filter and carburetor inlet screen for restriction, fuel hose for pinholes and collapsing condition. Inspect for air leaks, carbon build up, overheating ..etc What is the UT and Serial number of your XL-76 ?

SN:TH00353 is a 1986 model ..hmm, last year built memos say UT:50150 was last built in '84 ..could be a misprint. I have seven saws of that series: 2) XL-76 , 3) Super XL-130 , XL-130 , Super VI-200 ... Love them ! On the air filter .. there is a A-63955 available on eBay. IF you're close by I might part with a new or good pre-owned(new grommet) filter. Which province are you in ?

Almost all the manufacturers seem to list max rpm as no load max rpm. Max under load is a little more meaningful or better yet, chain speed under load. I'd be interested to know what a 60cc modern saw that has a max no load rpm around 13,500 turns in a cut in soft and hard wood.

I know their rpm's hold up pretty well in smaller to moderate cuts, of course we only runs 20" bars on ours. But I've never tached one in the cut. That would be interesting to see. The most I've ever seen one tach no load was 14,100 but that was max rpm. It was backed off to somewhere in 13's no load. I'm not saying they'll all turn that fast, that one may have been a bit exceptional.

Thinking out loud here but reason we tach saws no load is because it's a spec that can have closer variables then in wood cut.. it would be impossible to set a spec for max rpm in a cut because of all the variables.
Wet or dry wood, bar and chain combo length, size and type of wood, how much cut pressure, height of rakers etc...

Mounted the tach on the saw and had it set for 8500 to 9000 on the floor, in the cut dry wood,16 bar sharp chain 7700 and seemed to pull pretty good

It would be interesting to have one though.
