I know that yrs.ago John Deere had Homelite make their saws for them. What I'd like to know is what models of John Deere were produced by Homelite?I know that Dan (Sweepleader) has a John Deere that was made by Homelite (350CS).I also just found out that the J.D.550CS was the rebadged version of the Homelite 540. Edit:You don't have to respond to this thread,I found what I was looking for here on another thread. The only saws that I'd be interested in would be a J.D.350CS,or 550CS.Thanks!

Ed, did you look through Leon's Personal Collection? He has several, maybe all of them, I'm not sure.

The John Deere 550CS is a rebranded Homelite 8800 . houseofhomelite.proboards.com/thread/8033/rebranded-homelite-saws

This video from the GTG with TJ last this past spring has my 550CS doing a bit of work. It's definitely a strong saw!

Leon, you need to save on your back.Get yourself a peavey or a cant hook.I bought one back over 25 yrs.ago & the handle broke on it several times.I just kept whittling away at the end of it & reusing the same handle. Finally it got to the point that it was just too dang short to get any leverage anymore & I had to break down & buy a new handle last yr.The handle alone cost as much as the whole peavey did over 25 yrs.ago. Was Homelite under John Deeres' ownership when these saws showed up?

And were these saws designed with the help of European influences? I believe that Solo had already built a couple of models for Homelite.

There's a helluva lot of speculation that the 540 & 8800 were Solo influenced, but no written evidence that I know of. There's no corresponding Solo model as with the 290 & 340, but the 540 & 8800 do use a PruFrex coil, which is German if I'm not mistaken.

Well I don't know much about nothin, but I can tell you where some of the 540 design came from - the 410. At least that's my theory. Their basic design is virtually identical. And the 410 was around long before the 290s and 340s. Now I can't tell you where the 410 design came from, maybe it was Solo influenced for all I know.

That's a damned good point...the 410 design certainly does seem to be the base for the 40/8800. Even the starters will interchange!

I assume that's yours? The stool it's on kinda gives that away! That's a great looking saw. I see a fair amount of the echo and Remington John Deeres but not the homelites. Not around here anyway.

The Homelite John Deere's are pretty uncommon, especially the 350CS and 550CS.
