Back about 2 yrs.ago I got a saw that we had quite a time identifying at first. It turned out to be a Frankensaw with a 902 drivecase,a 903 engine,& a 925 rear handle.Even so the saw intrigued me & I put it on my list as a saw to get down the road if the opportunity ever presented itself.Well last week Christmas came a little early for me & I won the bid war on Ebay on what seems to be a good looking XL-902It looks like it had very little use.I don't know much more about the saw, even though I contacted the seller & inquired to see if the saw had compression & spark.I also asked the seller to take the muffler off & take a pic of the piston & cylinder to see if there was any scoring.I didn't get an answerr to either of my inquiries, but with a free return policy I figured I couldn't go wrong.Besides that,I've got another "902" that I can use for a few back up parts.I should get the saw mid-week.Meantime here's a link to the saw for pics. Well, here goes - I got the saw in the mail today & just as I suspected the ditz doesn't know howto take the bar & chain off for easier shipping.I asked her to take the muffler off to take a pic of the P&C & got no reply.I now understand why I got no reply.I had to destrtoy the muffler cap & body to get the muffler off.The nuts on the inside of the muffler body that hold the shoulder screws in were broke loose from the body,so the screws would just keep turning. The P&C are pristine with no scoring at all, looks great! The saw even has spark too,& it has good compression. There was a screw missing from the recoil starter mounting, but that's already been replaced.I'm fairly sure that I have a new muffler body here that I got from Leon for my old 902 two yrs.ago.I'm going to try to get a partial refund for the cost of parts. There's only one problem I'm having & that's in getting a new muffler body gasket - part # 120910.All in all,I'm fairly happy with the saw so far. What is the Type and Serial number of this Terry built XL-902am ? Type:50005,Ser.# 00900297.I believe I found the muffler gasket is the same as an XL-98A & SXL-925 - part # 78098. Ed

This saw keeps getting more "interesting" every day.The spark plug guard fell off,I can see where someone had glued it on with blue loctite.I'm not that concerned with it,so it can stay off as far as I'm concerned. The drive case cover has a small piece missing & so does the AF cover.I'll get a pic of the AF cover to see if it's OK to use the way it is,or if I need to get a new one. They had the wrong spark plug in it too.Oh,I found the muffler body thast I bought from Leon 2 yrs.ago,so not to worry on that. Here's a pic of the AF cover. As you can see there's a chunk missing from it.I'd like to know if this is still alright to use,or if I need a replacement cover. Ed

Looks like it would be safe, the inside will tell the story though. Does it hold the air filter properly in place?

You should be okay, but your plan is sound to check for junk after a bit of running!

Today I decided to have a look at the fuel line, filter,& carb. The line & the diaphragms in the carb were hard as a rock & the filter was totally wrong - it was for a smaller 35cc saw. Here's a pic of the fuel line which is not original. The blob of black goo is what's left of the grommets. It's got a Tilly HS66A for the carb.

This saw is another one with slow progress.I'm happy to say that I did finally get a refund from the seller to cover some of the cost of the parts needed.I had to replace the throttle rod boot on this saw too, those Stihl boots I got are coming in handy.I rebuilt the carb today & was going to install a new fuel line, grommets,& fuel filter, but I went through my entire parts inventory & found that I didn't have any more 68046 grommets,so I replenished my supply with an order for Leon.I know I'll get them by mid-week,so it's possible I could have the saw running by next weekend if all goes well.I just hope the grommets will work on the 902. I got the muffler on the saw today, that's a relief in itself.I misplaced the little fuel pipe that gets clamped to the housing of the saw with 2 pieces of fuel line at each end.I went out to the back shed with my son to dig out the other 902 thinking I could cannabalize that fuel pipe, but it wasn't on the saw.I did find a good drivecase cover & a felling spike on the saw though. The only thing with the cover is that the color doesn't match my newer 902.I came back in the house & looked a little further & found the fuel pipe.On Sun.I put it in a plastic bag with a new fuel filter so it wouldn't get lost & I forgot it.It's hell getting old & starting to lose my faculties.Lol Ed

I'm still waiting on the grommets for running the new fuel line that I ordered from Leon on Sun.Tracking shows it's been sitting in the Buffalo,N.Y.distribution ctr.since 4:38 a.m.on Thurs.Ah yes,the postal motto - "we shall deliver no mail before it's time".Still holds true 35 + yrs.later. Ed

The postal service came through with the much awaited grommets today (or maybe Santa had a hand in it?).I got the 1st grommet installed in the fuel tank without a problem, but the 2nd grommet in the air box was just plain nasty.I must've worked on that thing for well over a half hr.I couldn't get it ion place from the outside of the air box even with the oil line off & out of the way.I had to remove the screw right near the fule line hole, squeeze the grommet together in a U shape with a needle nose pliers & gently pry it into place with a screwdriver. The line & filter, along with the carb will go in tomorrow (hopefully). I got the line & filter in a couple of days ago.Yesterday I put the carb in & tried to attach the line, what a joke.I had to take the air box screw out again today to get access to the fuel line, then I had to pull the needles back out & pull the 2 mounting screws, pull the carb to the back of the air box & get 2 needle nose pliers on the Tygon line & push on one side & pull on the other side to move the line just enough to put the line onto the fuel inlet barb. What a PITA! Then I had to put the carb back into position & hope the mounting screws would start without cross threading into the reed block & put the needles back in as well. The saw is all back together now,& tomorrow I'll fuel it up & see if it'll fire up.
