Yes,I picked up this poor old neglected saw today. It's a points saw & it's missing the complete flywheel assembly (rotor, pawls, springs, washers, screen, pawl studs,FW nut & washer).Once I took the recoil off I found very little crud in the saw & the spark plug is almost new,so I'm assuming this saw has seen very little use.It also has a small bar on it,about 14 in.I'll get some before & after pics on here soon. No pics yet,but I did a lttle more assessment & found it's in dire need of a new fuel line.I also decided to test the manual oiler & it's a good thing I did.It was very stiff & it was stuck.I loosened the plunger nut & pulled the oiler plunger out.It looked new,but the old oil left a sticky residue.I sprayed in some PB Blaster & it started working much better.I knew from my 101's that the tank seals could go bad,so I filled the tank to see if that was the case.I had some oil on the floor, but I found it was from pumping the oiler.I'm going to try to get the flywheel off the 101 & put it on the 103.If the flywheel is anything like the FW nut was, then I just might buy another FW. I do have a problem with the decompression valve not wanting to work with the throttle lock.I'd better rephrase, the throttle lock doesn't want to lock & hold.I lubed up the decomp.valve & it's working great. All of the exterior throttle lock components are there,I don't know about the interior components. As promised, here are some pics of the ugly duckling.I gapped the points today.I must say that's an easy job since there was no flywheel to pull.Lol I have pulled off all the padding that was on the saw.Either the guy who owned it was a big time candy ass or he had some serious medical problem(s).I've run a 102 last yr.& theser saws don't vibrate that bad. I need some help on the throttle lock situation.I took the handle apart to see what the innards looked like. The trigger is like new - no pieces missing out of it,that portion works fine.I have the throttle lock pin & the spring on the exterior. The bushing is intact in the handle.I don't know at this point if there are any other parts that are missing that I should have. The IPL shows 2 different throttle lock assemblies.Anyone's help on this is greatly appreciated.I can't go any further on the saw till this issue is addressed first. The serial # is 2889466.I don't know the date of mfgr.on this serial #.I'd still like to know if I'm missing a part for the throttle lock.I depress the throttle lock pin & pull on the throttle trigger. This should lock the throttle in place, but it doesn't.I pulled the handle half off & the plastic bushing is intact in the handle half. The spring on the outside of the throttle lock pin is in place as well. The trigger is intact as well. Are there any other parts needed that are missing? It's difficult for me to see on the IPL since the watermark goes right through the area I need to see. Holy cow Charles! I don't know how I missed your reply last week.I did find out however that the problem I was having with the throttle lock pin was due to the fact that about 1/4 in.of the end of the pin was broken off making it impossible to engage with the throttle trigger.A new throttle lock pin is on the way & I should have it here by the end of next week. Today I put the flywheel assembly on the 103.(it's kinda tough to get anything done when I'm tethered to my wound vac 24/7 & having to infuse myself with antibiotics twice daily) I went to check for spark & found that somehow the spring got turned siderways in the plug boot.I got that straightened out & put a plug in the boot & pulled the recoil & had some nice blue spark! Tomorrow I'll see about putting grommets in the fuel tank & the air box & put a new fuel line & filter in.I know the carb is an SDC,but does anyone know if it has the accelerator pump on it like the 123 does? I did manage to find the grommets (64862) & get them in the saw on Sun.What size fuel line should I use on the saw? Also,I pulled the top cover off the carb to see how it was inside. The carb looks clean, but the diaphragms arer like cardboard,so it looks like it needs a rebuild.I see the carb has an accelerator pump. I use 1/8" ID X 1/4" OD with a 68046 fuel tank and airbox grommet on this series of saw.

Thanks Leon! But isn't the 68046 grommet a bit big on this saw?I found that the 64862 choke rod grommet gave a good fit on my 102.I'd assume that the holes for the fuel line entry into the fuel tank & air box are the same size on all the XL-10x series saws. Ed

I've had no problem with the 68046 grommet, but if the 64862 works better, there's no reason not to use it!

I got into the XL-103 today.I put the Stihl throttle rod boot in & it fit perfectly.I put the new throttle lock pin in & it works good too.I also rebuilt the carb,it was questionable so I went ahead & did it.I'm glad I did because the inlet screen was starting to fall apart & the diaphragms were starting to get wrinkly. The needles were way out of adjustment. The lo was set at 1 1/2 turns out & the hi was only set at 1/2 turn out.I'm surprised it didn't screw up the P&C.The fuel line came in today too,but I had to quit & get dinner going. Slow but steady wins the race.Today I put the carb back in & ran a new fuel line.I need to hunt up a new fuel filter & put the fuel line on the carb which might prove to be challenging at the least. The 1/8 ion.ID fuel line is a VERY tight fit on the inlet barb.A 3/13 ID line fits much better, but it won't pass through the grommets.Time to get out the eat gun. After that's finished I'll shine up the bar a bit on the wire wheel & put the B&C on & see if it'll fire. Ed

I finished up with the 103 today (hopefully).I connected the fuel line to the carb & put a new fuel filter in it.I tried to remove the rust from the bar with a wire wheel, but the rust is much more than just surface rust.I gave up on trying to clean it,so I found another identical bar in much better shape. Now the chain seems to want to bind a bit & I'm not sure if it just needs lube,or if the sprocket bearing is dry & it needs lubing.I'll mix some fuel tomorrow & see if it'll fire up. Things didn't go quite as planned today with the 103.I was all set to take the saw out & mix some fuel for it when just for the heck of it I pulled the recoil a couple of times & noticed that the decomp valve wasn't working on it.The lever & pin were working just fine, but I couldn't hear the familiar "whoosh" of it working.I took the muffler off & found quite a bit of carbon build up on the cylinder head. The little port was plugged completely too.I popped the spring off the top of the valve stem & had the valve working easier that way.I used an ice pick to gently pick out the port & shot some 3 in 1 oil into it & worked the pin up & dowen. Finally I gave 2 good pulls & I heard a piece of hardened carbon ping off my washing machine (I've been doing my saw work in my utility room). The saw now has the familiar "whoosh" of the decomp working again.Tomorrow will be the day to mix fuel & see if I've got a runner or not. It's been a while since I've worked on this PITA saw.I've got 135 psi compression, nice blue spark,& I pulled the carb again today to check it.It holds 7psi on the MityVac with no bleed down.I can't get this damn saw to run if my lifer depended on it.If I pull the choke on it'll fire like it wants to start, then I push the choke in & I get nothing.I'm beginning to think it has a giant air leak somewhere.I don't have time for this aggravation.

I’d say you’re right with your diagnosis. Although I’m sure you have plenty of other saws to keep you occupied!

If that saw has the plastic reed block there is about a 50% chance it’s cracked. That would likely contribute to your problems.
