I found a new cylinder for my saw but it is 58175-E but it is the one with the fitting or nipple on it somewhere. I have heard of this before but can't remember where. I have also heard
it can be plugged. Does anyone know what this is for? A photo would be great .
Thanks Wes

Leon had a cylinder like that about 1 1/2 yrs.ago when I was looking for one for my XP-1000.He told me that it can indeed be plugged off. This type cylinder was used on some other XP series saws & the tube was connected to the carb.I've heard that it was used to "cool the carb"? If you can get that cylinder for a good price, grab it by all means.I talked with Mr.Parrish of Parrish Implements in Ky.& he asked me if I knew where to get these cylinders. He's had multiple inquiries in the last couple months & he's fresh out.Even if you found out that it doesn't work for you (slim chance it won't),you won't lose money on it.As a matter of fact, you'd probably make a tidy sum on it. The fitting is for an "Idle Air Tube", that connects between the intake manifold and cylinder transfer port.
Refer to the; Homelite Chainsaw Service Shop Manual 4th Edition.
Page:45, Fig.HL59, shows the cylinder(#43) and idle tube(#46).
Page:41, Fig.HL53, shows the intake manifold(#9) and idle air tube(#20).

I'm ready to install my new piston and cylinder but I have some questions.. This cylinder is supposed to be chrome plated bore over aluminum casting. Why is the bore the same dull battleship gray color as the casting. Should I give it a light hone? Also I read somewhere that I can use gasket maker instead of a cylinder base gasket. Any recommendations
on what is the best.

The coating is for break in. No honeing needed. You can use sealer instead of a gasket but it will raise the compression some causing it to be harder to turn over and putting more strain on the starting parts. I personally would use a gasket.

Yeah, just give everything a light coat of clean motor oil and you'll be fine. I agree with Clasec: use a gasket.
