I have a Homelite XL1, SN T81 00077. The ignition Coil is a Prestolite 3405347. I am looking for a replacement as the coil needs to be heated up before the saw will start. My Dad bought this saw in 1981. I would like my grandson to get it when I am done with it.

Typically a saw that has an ignition coil problem has the opposite symptoms,i.e.the saw must be cold for it to start & once it gets warmed up the ignition coil starts to break down.I'd suggest to pull the flywheel & clean & regap the points,or install new points & condenser.Chances are that's where your problem lies. You must first determine if the saw has a Phelon ignition system or a Wico ignition system. These parts are not interchangeable.

What is the UT number of your Terry-built XL-1 that was manufactured in 1981 ? I'm fairly certain that it used the blue Prestolite ignition Module/Coil: A-94111, such as the one below; www.bantasaw.com/catalog/viewproduct.asp?i=846&p=1755Suggest trying to revive the module by baking at 200F for a few hours. Clean off any corrosion at the ground connection of the module and armature/core .

I have a 104554 super 2 dec of 77. I pulled the plug wire out and get no reading from the plug wire connection to and where on the ignition part and from primary it looks like its shorted to frame and I'm not sure of testing the point system should I switch to electronic if that's even possibke?

Sorry, I don't understand what it is you are asking. Can you retype your posting with some punctuation?

It seems OP is stating: 1. He gets no reading (open wire) between the spark plug terminal and the coil side of the lead. 2. The primary side of coil is shorted to ground. 3. Is not sure how to test point set/breaker components. 4. Wants to know if he should switch to solid state (1-piece) ignition (if possible). The high tension lead (spark plug wire) is the same part on both types of ignition systems (slightly different length), so if reading open (zero ohms), replace that first. Here is a link to another thread on HoH that does a nice job describing how to test ignition systems: houseofhomelite.proboards.com/thread/2682/ignition-system-testingYou can switch to electronic, but will have to replace the rotor (flywheel) and the coil. Also, the rotor key is oriented differently on each type of ignition system, so look at the IPL for reference. Here’s a link to the Super 2 IPL from Leon’s website (both types of ignition systems included): www.leonschainsawpartsandrepair.com/uploads/3/9/7/9/39792537/homelite_super_2_chainsaw_ipl_24983_revision_1_2.pdfHere’s a short list of parts you’d need to convert to electronic: C/D ignition system: Phelon rotor: A-94717 Ignition module: 94711-A Ground lead: 94721 High tension lead: 69326 Spark plug terminal: 94754 Hopefully this helps. Someone else in here with more knowledge might have more to add. Good luck.

Thread is kinda old. You need to determine if your saw has points ign or electronic ign. If electronic ign and the Blue coil of Death type, it's little sad.
Them electronic Mag Modules are expensive when found and not trustworthy/reliable. If it's the Blue coil of Death electronic type Homie you can review the baking procedure.
As ansms states above, to convert to points ign system you have to use a points flywheel, points coil and a electronic chip because you don't have a lobe on the crankshaft for points and no mounting holes in the block for points/condenser either. Kinda sounds like maybe you have a parts saw.
