I didn't see a spot for the multi-purpose saws,if there is please move this thread.I've got a chance to buy a MP 88 for $50 from my local saw shop. It's the same engine as the 540,that's why I'm posting here. The saw has awesome compression & the air filter is like new on it,not dirty at all.The saw is complete & has low hrs.on it.I'll pick it up in the next week or so,but I'll have to put ther saw on hold for a while as I found out erarlier today that I'll be having back surgery #3 soon.I'll get pics on here ASAP. At 50 bucks, that would be a deal as long as compression is good.

Nice find Ed! I passed up on an MP88 before finding my XL-98. Saw looked in good shape but was a "run when stored" situation, and wasn't willing to chance it, besides he wanted 4x what you paid. Looking forward to some pics!
Also wishing you a speedy recovery on your operation.

I picked it up & went through it quick. It's got great compression,I don't think the saw has been used more than once or twice.Therre's virtually no concrete dust on the saw anywhere. The filters are spotless. The fuel tank had stagnant fuel in it,probably at least 15 yrs.old.It'll need a new fuel line, fuel filter, impulse line,& a carb rebuild.I put some fuel in the carb & it firerd right up.Here are some pics, the last pic is what was left of the fuel line in the tank. Looking over the saw earlier I noticed that the impulse line needs to be replaced. Two questions - 1) What should I use for a replacement line?I know tygon won't hold up to the heat.2) How do I replace te impulse line?Must I remove the air bopx to do so? Ed

I was going by the letter H.Lol I guess that was the assembly line, right?I still don't get it though,R is the c18th letter of the alphabet,so shouldn't the yr.of production be 1998?

The latter letters, I still don’t know them by heart, and have to look at memo just to be sure.

I'm reviving this thread because I'll be needing this saw operational to cut new steel decking for my trailer in the next month or so. What I need to know is how do I replace the impulse line?Do I have to take the handle assembly off to get to it? Ed

Well I see I got a lot of answers on that question. It's now time for me to get this pig operational (I call it a pig because the fuel tank still stinks of that rancid fuel).I don't think I need a new impulse line from what I could see which wasn't much.I cut off the bad end where it connects to the carb & put it back on.I put in a new fuel line & filter & I pulled the carb. From what I could see the carb should be fine.It was clean as a whistle & had no fuel residue in it.The diaphragms were good on both sides. The needle was stuck a bit,but popped free & I put some fuel in it to lubricate it.It seems to be working fine, but when I put it back together it wouldn't pull any fuel.I've ordered the odd ball carb rebuild kit K10-WJ & I'll rebuild it.The boot was good as well which surprised me.

Sounds promising! But to the original question, the tanks would have to come off in order to replace the impulse line, if it was necessary.
