Well while fixing multiple other problems on this super XL925 I found another. I was putting it all back together and found that once the nut for the air filter cover was tight the cover was still a bit loose. I recently had this problem on another 925 of mine. I would be running the saw and realize the air filter cover was loose and I would have to stop and tighten it. I ordered a new filter for it thinking the rubber seal around the edge of the filter was crushed beyond its flexibility and assumed it was corrected. Once I had this problem on a different saw I though what is this really? I removed the filter cover for further examination and immediately found the problem. Now I must first say that I may have never or been a long time before I found this problem had I not watched one of Leon's videos on a 925. Once I removed the cover I saw that the flat metal piece that goes around the four edges of the filter was completely gone. The only thing left was the "legs" (lack of a better term this late) and that is why the filter cover was loose but the nut tight. I again grabbed the parts saw and it had the metal piece still in tact on its cover. I also removed the one from the other 925 that I had suspected the filter being the problem to inspect it. I found that the flat metal edge around the 4 sides was still there BUT it was thinner than the one off the parts saw. I would say roughly 1/2 the thickness. I regrettably did not take pictures of it or the one I installed however I did take a photo of the bad one which I posted a link here to. This might be something to watch for if you have this problem with a 925 or other model in that series. I am not sure of what else could be done to repair it other than to replace it. flic.kr/p/2gy85wh

So I was going through all my “spare parts” and “parts saws” this afternoon trying to straighten up a bit and found something interesting. At first I thought I had found everything to build a 5th superXL 925 because after all you can never have enough of those. Anyway then I noticed that more than 1 of my used soared air cleaner covers had this same wear pattern where the flat piece running around the edges connecting the pins on the cover was worn off. So I started digging and found I actually have 3 like this which makes me think it was a common issue. I am now looking for a solution to this as I hate to trash 3 of these covers. The problem it caused me was the filter cover wouldn’t stay tight because the nut bottomed out before the cover was seated tight. I’m thinking a spacer of some sort between the filter edge and these pins would be a good solution I just haven’t figured out what would work well and be easy to remove and install for service (as if it would ever need servicing sitting on a shelf) but if it helped someone in the future on a runner that’s great too

Yes I have I believe that might even be the one I eluded to in the original post. I am not sure if I watched the whole thing though. I have since learned that this was absolutely a common problem with the 925’s and Homelite even manufactured a gasket at one point to correct it or help correct it. I have a solution idea now from that same member that informed me of all this I believe I will try next time I have time to work in the shop and I will try to update this when I do. For now I would highly recommend anyone that has one of these saws to check their cover closely as it is likely the same way.

On some of my early 900 series saws they have this spacer when using a rubber edged filter. I am thinking they were used when the original steel edged filter was replaced with a rubber edged one. 925 air filter spacer-1 by Clasec, on Flickr 925 air filter spacer by Clasec, on Flickr

I’ve noticed that little red barn I think sells a steel edged filter. Is the steel edge closer to the factory original than the rubber edge one?

I haven't tried that type of filter, but if it is steel on top and rubber on bottom, that would be a good fix for this problem.

I purchased a NOS cover for $25. Fixed the problem.

Replacement can be made from 20 gauge (.036") sheet metal. Original measures .030"(22 gauge) on my SXL-925

air filter cover video 1/28/19 SXL-925.made by Leon , was a huge help , to telling me one of the major contributors to why piston scored on intake side. Air filter cover had no square sheet metal on carb side of cover, and had filter fitted when I got saw .and no compression . Thanks Leon
