Hi all
I have a chance to buy a Super 1050 Automatic with low compression and won't start for $50.00. Is this a money pit or a good deal?
Thanks

Welcome to House of Homelite. If its complete in otherwise good condition the parts are worth more than that. A new piston kit on Amazon is under $50.00 dollars. Now if the cylinder is ruined the repair cost goes up alot and finding a new or used cylinder usually takes some time. Great project if you have the time.

Thanks for getting back to me. The owner is out of town until Monday night. I am a diesel tech for the local Mack Truck dealer but no chainsaw experience.
Do you know if there are any special tools or equipment needed to disassemble it down to the cylinder?

No special tools really. You just take the cylinder off.

Welcome to the forum! Even if you have no chainsaw experience, you still have mechanical abilities. This would be a cake walk compared to diesel mechanics IMO.There are many members here who are more than qualified to walk you through the rebuild, all you need to do is ask, they are more than happy to help. Welcome to HOH! As Clasec indicated, if it needs a new cylinder that could be challenge. But sometimes it's just stuck rings that can be dealt with. $50 is a fairly safe price; worst case you can part it out and make your money back if the saw isn't salvageable.

Welcome aboard! My 990 gear drive I restored had severely low compression and luckily it was due to wear on the rings from so many years of use. $50 ain't bad and with patience you'll be able to find all the parts you need.

Welcome aboard! I would not hesitate to pay $50 for a S1050 in any condition. Post up some pics when possible.

well I got the saw and 4 chains. 2 of them brand new. I felt sorry for the guy and gave him $60.00
I took photos but they are to large to upload. How do I make them smaller?

You still did alright as far as I'm concerned. Two new chains are worth a bit right there. If you find that you need a new cylinder & can't find one anywhere, send me a PM & I'll try to hook you up. Ed

Ok here is my first attempt at uploading a file. I don't have photo of the bottom of the saw but it looks rough, like it spent a lot of time sliding around the back of a pickup. UT number is 10139A

You did all right. Saw looks complete. For what you gave, you can’t lose money.

Here are 2 pics of the bottom of the saw. Is there anything to be concerned about here? The saw has very good spark.
I have a couple of projects to finish before I can start on this one. Can anyone tell how oid it is from the serial number 1C1480070 ?

That's how the bottom of most of my saws look. The paint rubs off the bottom quick since the saw sits on it most of the time. Plus when you add in any idling while sitting the paint goes pretty quick. I'd say you did really good for the price. I am jealous. On a 9 digit serial the second digit is the year. C = 1981. Looks like some corrosion has taken place on the bottom .. small area nearly perforated through. *UT:10139-A ( SUPER 1050 ) SN:1C1480070 .. DOM; Thursday, May 28th, 1981, unit 70, UT# last built in '81

The corrosion is from storing on a concrete floor, don't do that with aluminum or magnesium. Concrete is damp and acidic. Nice saw.

I finally got a little caught up on my house projects and found some time to pull the cylinder off of my Super 1050. The piston and rings are trash but I'm not sure about the cylinder. There are some light vertical scoring lines. Is it ok to just clean them up..What are my options?

Can’t see close enough detailed pics of cylinder, but that should clean up. You only need to remove any aluminum transfer, do not remove any plating.

Today i decided to remove the clutch and flywheel. Since I already have my cylinder off stuffing rope in it won't work. hmmmmmmmmmm I'm not putting it back together. I cut two wood blocks to hold my piston pin and it worked.

HI all
I'm still here. I recently bought a new piston thanks to edju1958. I have decided to get my cylinder replated. It has chip in the ring travel area about the size of a grain of rice and deeper than the chrome plating. Has anyone ever had plating done at U.S. chrome? I sent them photos of the cylinder
and they said no problem but I cant get a good photo of the chip. The good news is I sold a motorcycle. Now I have money to get this saw back together.
