I got a phone call from my local saw dealer yesterday & he told me that he's got a "running" C-5 that he took in on a trade. He told me that he allowed the guy $50 on the trade-in,but I know him better than that. It's more likely that he allowed the guy $10-$20 on the trade-in.Anyway,the saw dealer wants $50 for the saw,it's complete with some paint loss.I don't know if it has tags.Just wondering if it's worth the $50 he's asking for it. I wouldnt hesitate to pay $50 if it was in running condition and complete, of course I may try to haggle him down to $40 or $30

The old saying, i guess it is worth (value) what ever somebody will pay. If you wait a couple weeks and he still has it, then maybe he will be inclined to take a lower offer. If it is gone, then we have an idea it was worth it. How bad do you want it Ed? If it is gone will you feel you missed out on deal? Dan

You have probably told him you could be interested in old Homelites and talked about your collection. He might indeed jack up the price for you. Like the guys said ^, you might offer him less and he might take it. You might go back to him (with money in your pocket) and say you are not so interested in it that you would pay his asking price and see what happens. I like to let them make a new offer at that point. He knows you are in the neighborhood so it is a little hard for him to believe that he will never see you again, like if you answered an add for it.

My opinion is if they call to sell me a saw they are thinking of me when they get one in. That is worth a little extra to me to keep it that way. As far as $50.00 dollars for a C5 that runs doesn't sound to bad to me especially if you can pick it up and save on shipping.

How does free sound?I went there shortly after posting this thread & there's no way the saw was running.I went to pull it over to see about the compression & it was seized. He tried to tell me it was probably in the recoil. Then I tried to move the chain & it was seized too.He told me I didn't owe him anything till I get it going, yeah right.I pulled the stack muffler off to see what the P&C looked like & it had a slight layer of white crusty stuff on the piston.Next I took the recoil off which was partially seized too.I cleaned all the crud out of it & kept working it till it freed up.There was a nice wasp nest on the cylinder head.I couldn't turn the FW at all.Next on the list was to take the drive case cover off, that took about 40 min.to get that off.I swear it was never off after it left the factory.I sprayed the chain down with PB Blaster & kept working the seized chain & got it almost entirely freed up.I put oil in the oil tank & tried the oiler, but it won't pump any oil.The spark plug was loose,so if it was setting outside like I was told it was, then water probably got into the cylinder.I put a 50/50 mix of ATF & acetone in it to see if it'll help to break it free.I took the clutch nut off hoping it'd break free, but no dice.BTW the clutch is like new.If nothing else,I've got a good parts saw. I was told that the saw was worked on a couple of yrs.ago & then it just sat.More like it was worked on a couple of decades ago & just sat. There's old fuel in the tank too.The fuel line looks new if that's any consolation.Lol He kept telling me "I know you'll get it going Ed".He must think I'm a miracle worker.Lol I almost forgot, the serial # 1335940,which according to Joyce's sales records was made between 10/62 & 11/62. i dont bother with junk, not worth the time even if its free, there are good 50 dollar c-5s out there, aceytone and ATF start to get expensive when they actually free a saw and you start dumping part money onto them. all said in done a free siezed saw might cost you more than a good running one would.

I wasn't sure if it was seized till I got it home & went through it.I'll never turn down a free parts saw even if it is seized. So far I've got $0 investerd. The parts on the saw are worth well over $100,so the way I look at it I'm at least $100 ahead of the game. Ed

Was there anything more than just a stack muffler used on the C5's? Ed

Stack muffler was standard. A regular muffler from a later model "C" series can be used.

As far as I know the C-5, C-51 & C-52 all came with the stack muffler, but as Greg said the muffler from the other C-series saws can replace it. Having run saws with the stack, it sounds cool for a few minutes but after that it's annoyingly loud! I personally don't see a performance improvement over a regular muffler either.

I wasn't looking for any type of performance enhancement, just trying to save what hearing I have left.Lol

If you're going to run and old C series saw for any amount of time , I would suggest ear plugs or some kind of hearing protection. The muffler is a little better than the stack but still pretty loud. Seems like all the old saws I have are LOUD, muffler or not.

I've got a bit of good news - I picked up a decent looking C5 on Ebay for $41.It's missing the drive case cover & it has "recoil issues".I guess that "junk" C5 that I got for free will come in handy after all. Ed

I got the C5 today that I bought on Ebay.I'm sure with a couple of new parts for the recoil & a few parts from each saw swapped back & forth that I'll have a runner. The newer C5's recoil didn't engage so I thought I'd just use the recoil from the first C5,but it didn't work either.I was able to turn the new C5 over by hand & I did see a spark when I checked for spark. The P&C look good with no scoring. The oiler works, but there's a problem with the throttle trigger - it seems that it doesn't have a spring in it (maybe broken) to return it to idle. The original C5 does have the spring in it,but it doesn't have the throttle lock (missing). The first C5 has a Tillotson 141A,the 2nd C5 has a 141B,I looked at both carbs very closely to try to see any subtle differences & I couldn't find any.The 2 carbs are virtually identical. The first C5 has had ATF/acetone 50/50 mix in the cylinder for almost a week now & no progress.I take an old hardwood handle from a hammer & put it on one of the FW fins & hit it sharply with a hammer several times to try to get it to move, but still nothing.
