Stumped again. My Blue XL-12 (1973) has a felt washer #63290 and cotter pin #86301 in the handle case that doesn't appear to do anything or connect anything. Can someone tell me what these do? Thanks

The cotter pin and felt washer in the air box chamber next to the carburetor act as a drain, in the event there is a fuel leak/spit-back from the carb., hose, etc. The felt washer prevents debris from being drawn into the air chamber.

Makes perfect sense. You guys are so smart, please don't be upset with my silly questions.
Thanks again

You might ask why put the cotter pin in a drain hole, (sometimes there is no felt to hold). It is cheaper to drill a large hole and put in the cotter than it is to drill a similar open area little hole; the drill bit would be so small that it is difficult to prevent breakage.
