Good evening group, I'm having an issue with the ratchet hub on my 770G, it randomly won't engage and just lets me pull the cord freely. I'm looking to completely disassemble the starter mechanism and check all the pcs per the IPL but want to know if the 3 steel balls are a standard size? I'll measure them to ensure that they weren't replaced with smaller ones and prevents the hub from working properly.
Thanks in advance for the info.

I am guessing your 770 has the overruning ball bearing starter. To be honest I've never seen one that doesn't once in a while freewheel. On my c-91 I always have to be sure to pull slowly until I feel the resistance before pulling sharply.
That being said you probably can improve things by pulling it apart and replacing some pieces. If it were me I would look up the part number on a IPL and see if somebody has some NOS ones. IIRC I don't think they are a standard size. Personally I've never replaced any components of any of mine- tearing it down, giving it a good cleaning, and reassembling has worked pretty well for me. Many people say no lubricant on the bearings but I like a light coat of 3-in-1 oil myself.

It requires the balls to drop by gravity to engage the starter, be sure the balls move very freely, sawdust, dirt, gummey oil will prevent the balls from dropping, then starter won't engage.
